Depends on budget.

But stay away from poorly built cars, and cars not registered correctly or registered as something else

As Ben says, mechanically it is reasonable easy to inspect, many can be plagued with wiring issues. Make sure switches, gauges all work and have a good look under the dashboard/bonnet to see how tidy the loom is etc. With regards to makes, it depends on your budget or taste, if its well built and you like the look of it then that's the one for you. Go to some shows or buy kit car mags or find out if there are some kit car clubs locally, most are friendly and will happily chat to you about their car. The best way is to see them in the flesh to get a real feel of what to buy.
