How much?

Hi!

I don't expect to get away with 250 pounds if I do decide to build a Locost. Do you want to share your secrets? How much did you pay?

under £2k, fireblade power, engine exhaust ect... well over 1/2 of budget.

Im Hoping to build one for under a £1000, X Flow or Pinto engined and then tune it later

I am budgeting for £1250 which will include 250 for a pair of Cobra seats.

It was a Sierra 4x4 2.8 v6 (standard 150bhp) and will have IRS, discs all round, rear LSD and centre LSD (in the middle diff powering the front diff).

I followed the book (other than the IRS - that was to my own design) but modified what I had kicking about. Used Jag XJ6 coliovers (£10 for 4) original Sierra Alloys all standard Sierra parts. Full set of XJ6 Dials (6 of them) were free with the coilovers. Even the Sierra speedo has been chopped up and is now fitted inside the jag speedo housing - so calibration is no issue.

Obviously Scotland breakers are cheaper than doon south. Sierra cost me £75 (plus £50 recovery fee).

It can be done on a small budget but you need to have all the tools and alot of inginuity.

I'd agree- that's why I've signed on the college course- for cheap access to expensive tools. Obviously it's not free (£90) for 20 lessons but you can't beat getting to choose from MIG/TIG/Gas/Arc welders (several of each), about 30 lathes, pillar drills, metal formers, metal guilotines, and loads of other people restoring cars who've been doing this sort of thing for decades.
Oh, and I nearly forgot- the opportunity to help oneself to the metal store and also get a 'schools discount' on any metal you actually have to buy through them.

With all this I'm currently budgeting up to £1500 to get a running car. It'll be a further ~£500 before I'm actually allowed to take it on the road- SVA £160, Tax £160, MOT ~£30, +insurance.

Even if that seems a lot to anyone, it's gonna take me about two years so £83 a month is cheaper than most other hobies I might do instead!

I don't realy care how much it's costing, I haven't been keeping tabs but I'd agree that anyone taking up this project should join an evening class at their local tech college for access to the machines.
