IVA tacho
Hi guys,
Any thoughts on whether a tacho would be needed for an IVA test?
I know it's not needed for an MOT, but what about IVA?
I know the obvious answer here is just have a working tacho, but just humour me....

I think you really know the answer. 
If you really really really are unsure - no............and still no 
(but it does help for the emissions / sound checks.)

Thanks, just having a nightmare getting it to work and I think it's the weird speedo unit thing I've got....
But it's not just a standard 50mm job so can't just swap it out either....
Ultimately I will get it working but the IVA is more important than a tacho!

short answer NO
long, qualified answer
the iva manual has one reference to 'tacho...'
where it could be used in the emissions testing
secn 02B quote:
Attach engine speed measuring device. It is permissible for the purposes of this check to use the vehicle tachometer.
you could put a clock (ie something that tells the time) in the hole for the gauge ;-)

NO - you don't need a tacho
BUT
at IVA you will be asked to hold 3.5 thousand rpm for the emissions test and also 4.5 thousand for the decibel test. That's the figures for an
MX5 based engine so bikes etc will be different.
NO you don't need a tacho but...

No you don't need a tacho and for mine even though I do have a tacho a sensor was attached to the engine which sensed the RPM while I was doing
the emissions test anyway and he told me to increase/ decrease as required.
The only other time it was need was for the noise test and that was done outside and was done off the tacho but as others have said it is not a
requirement for the car or test.
