Blacktop to st170
Hi guys,
I have a 2.0 blacktop running on standard ECU but have been thinking about more power.
One of the options is to swap to ST170 and again run on standard ECU.
Anyone know if this is a fairly easy swap?
Just looking to see how much of the blacktop I can reuse:
- exhaust mani
- log inlet mani
- engine mounts
- loom
- flywheel/clutch
- starter
Any pointers appreciated!
Thanks
Andy

Inlet no, the ecu will require info from the ( Imrc ) inlet manifold runner control modual. It’s not easy fitting the Oem manifold into a 7.
The loom will need heavily reworking.
What exhaust manifold, if it’s the standard Oem Zetec then no, if a 4-1 then yes. The st uses a 4-2-1 and would be better.
The st170 will do the advertised 170 if EVERYTHING is tickety boo most have sensor faults and make more like 155.
In short Hmmm I don’t think I would do another. Aftermarket ecu and throttle bodies will give more, add them to the st170 engine and you will get
loads more.
Turbo can be done with the Rs ecu but it’s a lot of plumbing as I am finding out.

The ST170 inlet manifold is massive and really not practical to use in a kit car. However it's pretty easy to use the part that bolts to the
head and make either bike carbs or ITBs fit. I fitted ZX6R carbs, Megajolt ignition and a VVTPro controller. All this gives 178bhp and 164lb/ft and is
very smooth and tractable.

Are you using the standard ford inlet and throttle body?
Have you thought about throttle bodies or bike carbs on the Blacktop? will make a big difference. (set of bike carbs with nodiz pro would be my
preference)
I have a ST170 on bike carbs with nodiz ecu and VVT controller which is fantastic. and a also blacktop zetec with GBS manifold - fuel injected race
car. cant beat the bike carbs for grunt and noise.

Thanks all,
I was thinking about ST170 I’m standard form, but as the inlet won’t fit kind of rules it out.
A lot of it was to do with cost as I could drop an engine in cheaper than I can get ITBs and ECU, but again was only going to be if it was fairly
straight forward.
I guess now I’ll look back at throttles or carbs, think I prefer injected to carbs out of the two though.

before you give up on the idea see if you can get the loan of an inlet manifold to play with. Guys are getting them in mk1/2 escorts and Mgb’s that
must be tighter between the wings than a Locost. They are flipping the plenum upside down,
