Unfinished project - how much is it worth?
Hi,
Next year I am looking to emigrate to Oz which unfortunately means that my unfinished project will need to go as I will not have the time nor money to
finish it.
I would be interested in peoples thought on what the kit would be worth given that it is only a set of wishbones away from being a rolling chassis. I
realise I am not going to get the money back I have put into it so far, but i am looking to recoup as much as I can.
Kit background. I got a live axle book chassis and parts a year and a half ago from a competent welder. Since then the chassis has been modified to
accept the De-Dion axle by a professional kitcar builder (Wizkits, Preston). I have also purchased quite a few parts from Luego and GTS. The kit now
compromises of the following:
De-dion Chassis with Cobra style hoops Chassis incs. fitted floor, suspension & de-dion axle brackets, Hand brake & seat belt mounts, Radiator
brackets. All have been painted or sprayed with rust proof paint.
2 litre Pinto engine (inc. ancillaries) & gearbox (both have been cleaned and painted and the engine has the following mods - short sump, modified
oil neck - for clearance)
Modified propshaft cleaned and painted
Full set of GTS poly bushes (+ spare rubber bushes)
GTS Shock Kit - still in orig packaging
Front cycle wing mounts (Luego)
Head Light brackets (Luego)
Fuel tank straps (Luego)
Pinto engine mounts & rubbers (Luego)
Part set of wishbones (came with the chassis)
Spare 1.6 pinto engine (gearbox and clutch sold on this website)
I still have the Sierra 1.6 donor - only engine and gearbox has been removed (will remove diff, steering and instruments etc for the sale)
Escort steering rack and steering wheel and column - needs reconditioning and cleaning up.
Cortina hubs - need reconditioning and cleaning up
5x new 13x5 Mini Light alloys (still boxed from Midland Wheel Supplies) - Ford fitment
4x new Pirelli 3000 tyres for the above
Motorlite leather steering wheel (from a caterham)
I have all the receipts for the parts from Luego, GTS, Midland Wheel Supplies, and the work carried out by Wizkits. The rest was got from e-bay and
the 2 litre engine and gearbox from this website. Donor vehicle had been my neighbours.
If anyone is interested in this kit then please contact me via U2U. I would like to try and avoid splitting it all up.
Any ideas on value would be very much appreciated. Once a figure is sorted I will then add it to the for sale section of the website with some
pictures.

I briefly looked at buying a part finished project before deciding on a VortX. The criteria that I seemed to settle on was "is it on its
wheels". You might find it easier to sell on if it can be rolled onto a trailer. I don't know how much work that would involve but it
might be worth concidering if you can't shift it as it is.

Looking outside for a moment - it's pi55ing it down, it's getting cold - winter is coming. I reckon if you get back what you have spent on
it you will have done well.

Take it to Aus if you can fit it in the container. Oh, best way to get your stuff over is a container of your own.
Latest price for me, IoW to Sydney, £1600, door to door with a 20footer.(£200 just to cross the Solent) You'll get a houseful and your car in
that.
The Aussies pay loads more than here, and you'll recover all your costs, shipping, and then some. With your personal stuff in the container, the
car gear goes in as personal effects, no duty.
Think about it. Also, finished cars over there go for stupidly high amounts of money.

Forgot to say, bin the Pinto, it won't pass latest Aus regs.
Sierra back ends, >aus$500, Type9 Box>aus$400. Take a few!! You won't have trouble selling them. Just don't tell customs.

Just to expand on syd's coments in australia a Locost must meet the CURRENT Australian design rules and the chassis MUST meet the beaming and
torsion test so if it is built to the book spec it will not meet the requirements unless extra bracing is added, doable though although Clubman cars
can get good prices Locosts generally do not sell well because there is basicly no spares back up ect.
You will need an engine that is compliant with current ADR 70 and basicly that means only a couple of years old and you have to run the stock fuel
injection . also you will have to pass a drive by noise test at 76 db .
but taking all of that into consideration if you can afford to ship the car and your tools Australia is a great place to drive an open car lovely
weather genenrally good roads and open spaces .and a thriving Locost community on the "Locost _OZ" list on Yahoo if you want to find out
what we have to go through to get on the road here.

Thanks for the info. I will pursue taking a kit across but most likely once I am settled over there.
Unfortunately at the moment i need the money to finance the move.
I have uploaded some photos to my archive. Most likely put on E-bay if I don't get much interest here.

Personally i'd say split it and sell seperately - I had to. its a bit more hassle, but seems easier to get things moving.

Sad to say it is worth a lot more in bits than as a complete project! Try listing bits on the for sale section here and on ebay it will take more time
to do but you stand a fair chance of getting most your money back. If you look at ebay part finished projects go for between £400 and £1000.

If you wanted to ship the car, try the following companies.
Southampton freight services 023 8086 0999 for the clearance and NEC entry for customs, ask for chris.
Norman Offer Ltd 023 80331515 for the packing, ask for Ron.
Mitsui OSK Line, 023 80714545, for the container supply and shipping, ask for paul or dawn.
bear in mind it takes just over 3 weeks from loading to unloading!
