Moving half built car

Hi guys,

I'm moving house and need to move my car.

How did you do it?

Do you know of any places that rent trailers near london?

Cheers,

I've moved mine twice now, still can't find a few bits. I was lucky in that it wasn't a rolling chassis when i moved it, so got it on a 6x4 domestic trailer, sticking out the back a little..

Where are you?

I'm in west london Donut.

I'm going Ealing -> Chiswick.

I don't have a problem with moving most of the stuff it's just the rolling chassis. It's got brakes and steering and the engine is in but no electrics so not running.

I've had a quick google but couldn't see anything hopeful on the trailer front.

I'm going to have to push it aren't I. It's only about 10 miles. I'm sure it will be fine.

Are you using a removal;s firm to move house? If so, see if they can move it for you - should fit in the back of a removal lorry OK and with 3-4 for people and the tail lift it should be easy enough to get it in there

Nah already moved all the rest of my stuff in a transit van. I have a month or so before I have to have the garage clear though.

Tranny van, If its not built, then put it in a normal one, if its got wheels - back of a luton,

Use your engine crane and the tail lift to get it int, piece of cake.

For everything else, just put it in boxes, lots of carefully labelled boxes.

A good idea but I lifted the engine originally by suspending ropes from the garage roof beams. I'm not sure I'd want to trust most of the weight of the car to it or that I could reverse a luton down my drive without crashing into one of the houses.

A guy came to pick up the old sierra shell in a luton and managed to reverse it down but it was a skillful bit of driving. He had to fold both wing mirrors in to avoid hitting the houses on either side and the turn in was a precision bit of driving too he missed the railings at the front and the wall on either side by millimeters. I could hardly watch.

I'm not sure I'm up to that task.

I could get in touch with the AA or something like that and see how much it would cost for them to tow it for me to the new house.

Or get hold of a ramp so the car could be pushed up the drive and then rolled on to the luton.

Hmmmn.

surely you could get a good price from a recovery company, tell them theres no rush and they can do it in a quiet spot.

Cant you just get hold of (hire) a towing dolly and tow it behind a car?? It's essentially a trailer then so shouldn't need tax or owt. Think that's right...

As far as I know any car that is towed using a towing dolly needs to be road legal i.e. registered, txed and MOT'd

How far do you need to move it and when??

Rich.

Ah but it's not a car... it's an incomplete home-made trailer...

I need to move it about 10 miles by the end of april.

A recovery company sounds like a good idea. I shall do a google for towing dollys as well.

Cheers guys,

How about fabricating a drawbar that would bolt on to the front end of the chassis giving you a very odd shaped trailer?

However I'd probably go for the dolly idea really...

IMHO, you would never convince a copper that it was a trailer. Now that doesnt bother me, but you should be aware that you are probably breaking the law with towing dolls.
