I ran out of fuel

I ran out of fuel on the way home from a short blat this evening. I live on the top of a hill with a fairly steep road leading up it. As I got to the crossroads and dipped the clutch as I stopped, the engine idled strangely and stopped. Fortuneatly at the top of the hill about 200m from home. Nice that you get a bit of notice then. So now I know. 190 miles on a full tank.

I have a fuel gauge but it doesn't have a light. It was reading zero when I looked.

I also use one of the trip meters to measure "miles this tankful". I've always worked on 180 miles per tank. If I'd looked before I went out I'd have known to fill up.

I'm just glad I wasn't at the bottom of the hill.

Same happened to me - no warning just stopped. This confirmed that when gauge reads zero i dont have too many miles left! I then realised that these cars dont coast along too well seeing as they are so light?

You could adjust your sender so that when the guage reads empty you still have enough to get you to a petrol station.

My sender's a bit like that - when the gauge shows zero I have much less than 1 gallon in the tank... and I can't adjust my sender, unless I make a fixture to raise it a cm or two (it's a dip-tube).

I don't let it worry me - I just refill when the needle is approaching zero.
