Striker Engine
Well, after several years of little Locost progress, and at least one of none whatsever (arrival of offsrping!), I am hopefully buying a Striker sans
engine to use in what remains of the summer. Will probably be keeping the locost for now as I really want to finish it, but we'll have to see
if that's realistic as SWMBO isn't exactly thrilled about this potential addition to the fleet.
The 4AGE seems to be the engine of choice for these cars, but does anyone know if a 20XE or Zetec would be suitable? Too heavy/large?

I have seen a very rapid XE engined striker competing in sprints this year and last if that helps,

Bike engines need not apply! Seriously, the investment required to put a bike engine into this car (which was crossflow based) would blow the budget.
I already have a 20XE with alloy bellhousing, a set of throttle bodies, ECU, and a set of engine mounts that could be adapted. If I can use it I
will, if not then I will just buy a 1600 crossflow and get it on the road to enjoy before summer runs out.

The engine of choice for all round ability is the "blacktop" 20V 4AGE for its lightweight, compact design with 150BHP from very light
internals, 20V Yamaha designed head and 4 individual throttle bodies from the factory.
Mel at RAW didn't know it existed (they were buying the "silvertop" ) till I took him out in my Striker. Their demo car is now
fitted with a "blacktop"!
If you want it on the road for summer then stick with a xflow if you can get one at a good price.

Out of interest, what gearboxes are generaly used with the 4AGE? Type 9 and special bellhousing or a Toyota box?

I've put an XE in a phoenix which has got the same chassis - few mods but nothing major.
If you want somethnig running this summer I'd put whatever came out of it for now - depending on what is left of the old install (wiring, mounts
etc) purely for getting it on the road.

For ease the Type 9 with custom bell housing is the usual choice.
