New User - Help
Hey guys,
New to this forum, considering giving up the world of biking and getting a kit car.
I like the '7' style, Mk Indy cars but im not sure about what exactly i should be looking for.
Do the bike engined cars have reverse?
Am i able to have a cosworth engined car?
Are the cars real wheel drive?
Can i have disks all round?
Anything else i should know?
Would want to buy second hand, probably with a bike engine and disks all round if possible - any ideas on price?

Welcome to the madhouse. To answer your questions
1 - Bike engined cars can have a reverse box fitted but few people do. The BEC's generally weigh < 500kgs and are quite easy to push
backwards
2 - Yes, if thats what floats your boat.
3 - Yes, they are nearly all rear wheel drive apart from the odd 4 wheel drive Dax.
4 - You certainly can
Expect to pay between 7K & 10K for a nice example. There are a couple for sale now if you look in the For Sale section of the forum. Good luck.

Hi, and welcome to the nut house 
Bike engined cars dont have reverse, unless yu fit an electric unit which is very expensive and heavy. Up to you though as the cars are so light they
are easy to push.
You can fit a cossie engine if you want to. Expensive option though. I believe Darren at GTS has made a couple of Cossie cars...though I am not 100%
sure.
All the commercial kits are rwd, unless you build one of the Dax kit, some of which are 4WD and chevy engined.
You can fit discs all around if you fit 15" or bigger wheels.

Hi - Welcome - 2.5 years ago, I had very similar questions.
Qo the bike engined cars have reverse? A: They can do. Realistically this 'option' adds circa £900 to a new build.
Q: Am i able to have a cosworth engined car?
A: Yes, all sorts of engines can be fitted. Coswoths have certainly been done.
Q: Are the cars real wheel drive?
A: Most of the 'Lotus Seven Inspired Sportscars' use ford (Escort MkII, Cortina or Sierra) running gear. So yes, RWD.
Q: Can i have disks all round?
A: Yup, just pick the right Sierra to rob the bits off.
Q: Anything else i should know?
A: Loads - take your time read the forum. If you have a question, someone will have the answer.
Prices start from £4k.. start with the For Sale section. You might need to go back a few pages.

Theres a guy in our club with a monster fire breathing cosworth 4wd Dax.
Twin becs have been done.
You are only limited by your imagination / skills / budget. There is very little that cant be achieved.

You can use 13" wheels as well depending on what callipers and disks you use at the back, theres' more than just Ford stuff that you can
use.

just a question, I thought BEC's were required to have reverse? Tim mentions it as an 'option' can you sneak through a SVA
without?

No sneaking required. You can build and SVA a car without a reverse. No problem.
You can get a reverse box which sits between 2 short prop shafts. This gives you 6 reverse gears with a top speed of over 100 MPH in reverse. The
world record for top speed in reverse was done this way. They are expensive though, more than my engine cost.
You can fit an electric reverse using various starter motors. They don't have much power though.
Personnaly, I don't have one and rarely need it. I push the car backwards out of the garage. I push the car backwards into a parking space if
I can't just drive through. I don't do 3 point turns. The only problems are dead ends at the bottom of steep hills (haven't found
one of these yet) and single track roads that go to a ford. I just went through the water.

I'm using Sierra calipers and disks under 13 inch wheels. You have to be careful with your wheel choice though.

James Miles (HiCost on here) has a Cossie engined 7. Very quick car apparently.
As said you can have discs all round on smaller wheels. I have standard sierra ghia brakes (vented front and solid rear) under 14" wheels.
