Getting started !

Right thanks to a little help from 5th gear locost has come to my attention !

I've been looking at getting back into racing for a while now after taking part in rallying and Karting in the past, but I could do with a little help !!!

Basically I'm looking at building a locost for track and road use mainly to play around with those of you at the tail end of the pack as I can't afford too much.

What I'm trying to find out is what I need ! I've seen several chassis packs etc. with lots of odds n sods with it, but I'd need a lot more to make it into a car ! From what I understand I need an Escort for engine donation and a granada for the gear box, but what else e.g. where does the pedal box and exhuast come from ?

If anyone can give me a hand sorting this or site liks it would be appreciated. Also a rough cost for the lot would be nice

Cheers

Hi Mike

Welcome to the crazy world of Locosting.

I have put a list of costs on my site which may help, although this was for a road car.

http://www.geocities.com/locostuk

It is also worth looking at the MK engineering site. Martin is well respected as a supplier of Locost bits and his quality IMHO is second to none. No connection other than being a satisfied customer.

http://www.mkengineering.co.uk/

Hope this is some help.

Regards

Alan

Mike,

First thing to do: buy the book!

Click on the link at the top right of the page and it'll take you to Amazon.com and you can get it from them.

The book'll give you a list of what you need and where to get it from.

Good Luck,

James

If you are buying the book *please* use the link above! I get a quid out of it towards the site (and the bandwidth it's now consuming - arghh!) and it's still cheaper than buying it in the high street.

Also, Il'l (probably) have an RS2000 gearbox for sale in a few weeks if you're interested.

Cheers, Chris

Welcome Mike,

Not many Granada gearboxes will be any good, Really you need a MK2 Escort, and the book from Chris (and patience) You've already made a good start by posting on here, check out the websites of the guys on here. Much knowledge!

Click on the little house at the bottom of posts or look on the member list.

Note to all: I really don't know when to leave well alone. I tried to get clever with the mods, then when they gave me a lifeline to see the error of my ways, I tried to incite more trouble via u2u. So now I'm banned, never to return again. They should have done it years ago!

Hello and welcome to the group, no, the family.

One of the most important things to get is a very bad photo of yourself, about 150*150 pixels ought to do.

Oh, and a Sierra steering column - there, I'm not completely useless.

Liam

Depends on the granada. The mk3 have a type 9 or mt75. The mk2 are probably the old 4 speed whatevers. Sod it - fell right into a dont know anything about that hole.

However, I do have a nice clean haynes manual for a mk2 granny here - if anyone wants it for a fiver its theirs.

Ha Ha, got ya!!!

84 % of all Granadas (and scorpios, consuls etc) had auto boxes. According to my mathematics thats 16% manual boxes. Even if all those boxes fitted (which they don't) that falls right in the middle of my definition of "not very many"

Yes, YES, feel my glory, breathe my triumph!!

Back in your tank Steve!!

Actually, your wrong.

100% of all aut granadas had an auto box in em.

Having spent a thrilling 7 weeks (not all in one go) at a car aution before I bough my mk3, now sadly deceased and probably a washing machine, or even worse, a vauhall, i looked at loadsa granadas.

Lots of 2.0 ones are manual - would you want an auto on a car that big with 100hp to drive it?

SOME 2.4l had manuals - I bout one of the two I saw.

However, just about every frigggin 2.8 or 2.9 (which is where you are coming from I recon) are autos. I gave up on a 2.9 as my life was ebbing away amoungst del boy car types in the auction.

ANd again your wrong - Auto grandas have a manual - its in the glove box.

Hah

too easy.

never even needed to load up.
