DVLA Aaaargh!

My VortX is nearly a year old and I have a road tax reminder saying that I need to take an appropriate MOT certificate to the post office. I don't have one because I don't need one until the car is 3 years old. I have a letter from the DVLA saying this.

The post office guy pulled his face but eventually gave me a disc but said I had to phone the DVLA to put it right. DVLA swansea clearly don't know what they're talking about but insist that I need an MOT '"cause it's a Q plate". They're going to sort it out, by which I take it, they're going to force me to have an MOT. Can anyone quote a rule number for me to use in evidence that says a kit car doesn't need an MOT until it is 3 years old?

Did you MOT before SVA? It's very unclear depending on who you speak to, but regardless once you're "in the system" (ie you've had an MOT) then it's every year from then, even if you have one only 6 months from SVA for whatever reason.

I got conflicting advice from DVLA/Vosa etc when mine was "due", but in the end I had to get an MOT because the previous owner got it MOT'd before I bought it (about 9 months after SVA).

No. I took it for an "MOT" before SVA but the ground clearance was too low to get the car in to the test bay. No vehcile details were given to the guy so I'm not in the MOT system.

Hi Mate,
I have a Q plate and I didn't need an MOT and I won't need one for another two and a half years!
Here is a post I submitted last year in reply to someone else who was experiencing difficulty concerning the great DVLA debate. Hope it helps,
Merry Christmas!

You don't pigging well need one. I have a letter from the head woman at Swansea saying so! And I intend to wave it under the nose of the person at the local DVLA office when I go to get my car registered! Write to her and quote the letter they sent me (Mr J Beedle) on 24th March 2006, ref: VPG 2/1/12

Let me know how you get on.

The DVLA rang back today. They agreed that the car doesn't need an MOT but the tax renewal will always say that it does so I should renew on-line or at the DVLA office.
