axle stand location
Possible the most stupid question on here but I want to be sure so here goes…..
My range rover classic is off the road at the moment and I need to get some new rear tires so I have to remove the wheels and drop them off to get
sorted. I have some 2 Tonne axle stands and wanted to know if I can use them under …….wait for it……the rear axle? To me, knowing its got a ‘drive
shaft’ running thru it that it would just crush the outer wall of the axle. Am I being blonde? Will it be fine for a day sitting there like this as
the axle stands don’t extend to the chassis rails?

Yep should be fine 
Wouldn't be much of an axle if it collapsed under that kind of load

What do the springs / shocks attach to? They hold the weight of the car, so all you're doing is adding he weight of the axle. Should have
thought it would be perfectly fine.

Under the Axle Casing is fine, this is easily thick enough to hold the vehilce.
Similarly you can jack by putting the trolley jack under the DIFF. Note this is off set so it will lift onside first.
If you were removing the rear axle (or front) then put the stand on the Chassis Rail Close to the Radius Arm Pick up
Scot's do it better in Kilts.

yep - axle stand under the axle tube is fine - as ^^^ said, the weight of the vehicle sits on them tubes.
keep clear of the diff cover - these are prone to rusting but it wuojd be quite an achievement to jack it up by the cover.

Putting axle stands under the axle will be OK. My mate does it when rebuilding Landrovers etc. Also jacks on the diff with no issues (other than it
being offset).

thanks guys. i knew it was a risky question but didnt want to try it without asking first.
I was going to jack it up under the fuel tank.....only joking. The rear diff casing is rust free, due to the sump leaking lol. But i will jack it up
off the chassis with a good sized packer.
