Help guys - Building it myself now after getting shafted!

Hi Everyone,

I'm new here so apologies if this is in the wrong section.

Heres the story...
I paid someone to build me a kit car (MK Indy with R1 engine) and a year and a half later I now have a much lighter wallet and just a chassis to show for it!

I've decided to complete the build myself as I want something to show for all this money and time, but I need to source 95% of the parts!

I've got good technical knowledge and a well equipped garage so I’m raring to go.

Please can anyone know where I should start in the way of obtaining parts, has anyone got any spares kicking about I can buy or should I just hit eBay?

If anyone is based in Sussex/Kent and wants to chat let me know.

Any advice would be great.

Many Thanks
Stuart

Best put up a list on here of all the bits you require and you'll probably be surprised at the response. Great bunch here and very knowledgable and helpful.

Hi Stuart, I'm down in Hove, E Sussex & building (very slowly) an R1 Indy R. I got a donor sierra off ebay but if I was doing it again I'd probably just try & get recon bits of ebay rather than the hassle of stripping one down. I've got a set of rear drums all recon'd with new pads & pistons sat in the garage if your'e interested.

Good luck with the build

Jon

yeh ebay is always a good bet,
As craigr said, ask on here theres bound to be someone with the bits you need!

Do you have all the running gear etc? if not try getting yourself a donor vehicle

Hi Stuart

I have a set of front sierra hubs and cal's i no longer need if they're of use to you.

UNDERSTEER is when you hit the wall with the front of the car.
OVERSTEER is when you hit the wall with the rear of the car.
HORSEPOWER is how fast you hit the wall.
TORQUE is how far you take the wall with you.

Hi Stuart - And welcome - sorry to here your woes. Better to build it yourself anyway

ADD YOUR LOCATION TO YOUR PROFILE <<<

But anyway, I am planning to Change my diff from Open to LSD in Feb or March at the latest (Need to get central heating in first ). So there will be a Seirra open diff going FOC if you want it
You will need to sort out cost of postage.

Andy

First thing I would do is get back some money from the 'builder'. Did you have a contract with them which you can contest?
Getting some money off them will certainly help buy many parts.

Sorry to here about that Stuart.
Was the builder local to you, any names to mention, might stop someone else getting ripped off.

Yes, it would be good to give at least a hint of who it was, though I'm guessing it's somebody who doesn't do this stuff all the time.

i would disagree with bits off ebay for a first build, if i was doing it again i think i would go down the parts direction but as i new builder i fear you'll just end up with lots of parts that dont fit or have bits missing.

I find that Ebay is hit or MISS and very often expensive.

Switches £4 each plus postage of £6.00 and the seller won;t group postage.

Then when it doesn;t work - sorry mate -SOLD as SEEN(online)

Ebay has become "Buy it now" land which is a subarb (sp?) of Hong Kong or China......

Even about 50% of the so called "UK" sellers are still posting in HONGKONG or CHINA.

rant over. (ps soz for thread hijack)

Parts off Ebay?
Well OK on some parts.
However for Brakes, Suspension, and Steering parts, I would get them from a recognise motor factor eg Partco, or RallyDesign, or any of the well known suppliers.

With ANY "Mission Critical" or safety related part, I would not trust Ebay or anyone else!.
There are too may shysters selling duff or worn out kit, or possibly even fake parts and general crap to put your life, your passengers, or the Publics at risk just to save a few quid.
Make sure what you build is of good quality and above all SAFE!

You know it makes sense!

Should have some used front stays (for your cycle wings) after Xmas if they're of any use to you? I have some new ones that I'll be putting on during the dodgier weather after Chrimbo.

Cheers,

Francis.

I wouldn't bother with a donor if your building a BEC not that many parts are needed when going down this route, better getting parts from scrap yards Ebay or specialists dealers, check the links on this website for some of the trusted ones, there is a link top left of the page.

Also, the guy that was building my car has bought rear mounts for drums, is it expensive to replace them with disc versions or shall i just weld on a bracket to take the caliper mount?

If you want to do this on the cheap, there is a rebuilt 1300cc Crossflow in the For Sales. It would mean a bit of chassis modding, but nothing great. Just by coming on here, within a week, you can amass a huge amount of stuff needed, without breaking the bank. It's good news from here on in!
