What are you building?

If someone passed by your house, saw you working and asked you "What's that you're building?" what would you reply?

Edited to make more sense!

Chris

I normally say Kit Car as most people know what this is (roughly) followed by an explaination of what a Locost is.
If they know what the cars grand daddy was, it's generally easier to explain what it looks like.

Well, technically it is a locost, but it is different. It has homebuilt IRS and it has an unusual bike engine. The only thing it really has in common with a locost is the bodywork, steering and hubs. It is made from 3mm steels tube rather than 2mm and has a steel floor as well. It has kind of progressed on from the original.

I say I'm building a replica of an old Race car!

It will look like one and it will be used in motorsports, so is not technically lieing!

I used to try and explain that the it was a scratch built car. The term kit car implies an assembly job, but I think most people building on here do far more than that... I used to get pissed off by "kit car" but know I can't be bothered to explain.

Cheers

Alan, Steve, think you're missing the point. We all know what you are building, but what I'm asking is how you'd sum up the project in one sentance to a passer by.

I definately say kit car- if people show a modicum of interest then I'll say about building it from scratch that I've welded my own chassis together.

I'm not going to say Locost- it's far too Joe Rikey sounding!

Sometimes..... "F$*K off and mind your own business you nosey twat"..... but more usually I tell people its a Lotus 7 look-alike. Depending on the reaction I get having told them that, I then go into the MK Indy bit.

Ok then...

Generally I say, "I'm building my own car completely from scratch"

A mate from work was helping me shift some of my other automotive aquisitions (scrappers) and brought along his 10 year old son.

The both had a good look at my car, Aubrey asked some interesting technical questions, and all along, Christopher, his son was tugging at his sleeve. His curiosity everwhelmed his shyness, and asked

"Why is mark making a go-cart THAT BIG?"

It's been a standing joke at work ever since!

i often get the 'which kit is it?' question when i say im building a kitcar, but nowadays i take that as a sign they at least know something about the hobby (ie that it is possible to build a car at home) and so i go on and explain about scratch building. some still dont get it until they see it though. One mate asked if it would still look like a sierra!

me "a lotus 11"
them "oh like a westie/caterham"
me "no wait there"
run in house and get a book with pictures of elevens
them "it is completely different to what i thought, so it’s a kit car then"
and then invite them in the garage show them the body, chassis etc, and ask if they have seen an old cortina anywhere(never no)

My delightful work colleagues came up with that one!
They're convinced that having spent all this effort that first run I'm going to wrap it round a tree!

Probably right!

On a Monday morning I'm often asked if I spent any time on The Death Coffin at the weekend.

people at work / in the street / in my family regularly ask about the car.

I have to finish it now - or look like the worlds worst failure, or a total hero.

Im not too bad at one of those
