Oil pressure loss... this is why. Thoughts or opinions welcome

You can see a good main bearing on the left, this is the first one, then 5 and 6 show some wear. Now I cant see any marks on the crank so to speak. Could I just put some new shells in or will the same happen to them?

They look worn, not really scratched up.

Thoughts/opinions?

I was getting good oil pressure at 1500rpm(20psi) 0 psi at idle....

It looks like you might get away with new shells but you really need to get the crank checked with a micrometer to be sure.

Yep, get the journals checked with a micrometer

They may look good but if they're out of spec' and you just fit new shells, you'll be doing all this again shortly

Usually the bearings furthest away from the oil pump show the damage first

What are the big end shells like ? Its usually those that take the most hammering and suffer first

Would also be worth checking the oil pump aswell if you haven't already

Didn't make IVA, I've a none running car at the minute, I can turn the engine over but can't get the bloody thing to fire properly

The only issue is that if I take the crank out it becomes a huge bill in parts alone(bmw 'M' tax!).

Gaskets £400
crank re-grind £200
shells £11 each
bolts £5 each
conrod shells £8 each
bolts £80 set
Rings £120
Bore hone £150
Head gasket £150
valves and seals while i'm there......

etc etc..... also i've not got the specialist tools to set up the vanos stuff/cam timing.

Thats not including seals other gaskets etc etc.....

I'm not sure I could get a proper measurement with the crank still in, guess I could try though.

I've not checked big end's yet. In a strange sort of way i'm happy my diagnosis was right.

Oil pump is totally fine, I rebuilt it before fitting it. Its a twin pick-up jobbie too. so if one pipe was clogged the other would be fine. Not taken it apart again yet though but it seems to be working fine.

You could be looking at this the wrong way though, that could simply be the consequence of low oil pressure and the cause is elsewhere.

Got to agree with that. You see cars with knocking big-ends that still have oil pressure. Just because they're worn doesn't make that the cause rather than the effect.

Those bearings don't look too bad, as above I would look elsewhere for the problem. I think you have found a symptom, not the cause. And yes, 99% certain a new set of bearings is all that is needed. But find the problem.....

As above I would be expecting something else somewhere too. If you just replace the shells it will always be in the back of your mind that it could be something else.

Also I would be looking at is it worth the cost of a rebuild on a 160k engine at those prices? You could probably recoup a fair bit if you split for bits. As you know you can pick up complete 3.2 engines for not a great deal now.

Granted you could rebuild and have a solid motor as a spare but its gonna sting at 1k+

By the way did vosa postpone your IVA?

Yep, postponed for sometime in 2011

I've a low milage 3.2 evo engine sat in the car at the minute, just can't get it to fire up. Seems i'm suffering some EWS issues on it. Turns over nicely though.

I might just find a decent 3.0 and put that in, sell the evo one.

Don't suppose you're in the market for a 3.15LSD diff
