Possible wheel bearing failier ?
I'm on holliday in Holland , and I am worried I may have a major problem............
Yesterday I had a bit of noise from the front right wheel in slow corners , so I checked when I got set up at a campsite , and there was a lot of play
in the hub . And I mean A LOT !
I took the wheel off and adjusted the bearing , all seemed fine - no rumbling while spinning the wheel , all the play gone in just a quater turn of
the nut (Escort upright/hub setup)
But......today I nipped to the shop for food (and alcahol......) , and there is a ton of nasty noise from that same wheel while turning
left..........it sounds like there is metal to metal contact somewhere ?
Is the bearing likely to collapse on the way home.......or shouild I be hunting around Holland for a Mk 2 Escort wheel bearing kit
Its cuz I is blond , innit

Afraid it Does sound as though it needs further investigation
Is the car pulling to one side at all ?
Any abnormal Heat in the centre of the roadwheel ?
Jack the car up and rotate the wheel by hand, check for any grating or unusual noise
When you adjusted the per-load on the bearing did you back the nut off slightly afterwards ?

What they said ^^^
Take the hub off and have a proper look. My money would be on a bearing cage breaking up.

So......this could be a problem......if I take it apart and find it's dead , I then cant go looking for a replacement
Is there a Dutch equivalent to the back-street motor factors that we in England rely on so much ? I'll be needing a front wheel bearing kit for
a Mk2 Escort , 1978 vintage..................
I'm near Apeldoorn if that helps...................

Hi,
You could try Brezan. It's a chain of car material shops that sells all kinds of car parts. They should be able to track your part.
There's one in Apeldoorn on the Europaweg 180. Phone 055 541 0110 (or +31 55 541 0110 from a foreign phone. Email is apeldoorn@brezan.nl
Or you could try Speedon, a dutch kitcar company. Sells and builds kit cars and supplies parts. Very active in the Dutch Kitcar Club and very friendly
people. They are in Ede which is about 45 mins from Apeldoorn. Adress is Fultonstaat 1 in Ede, telephone is 0318-690122 (best between 15.00 and 19.00
hours) and email is info@speedon.nl
Hope this helps.

I've had it happen. Luckily it was on my (at the time) new trailer, fitted with sealed for life, non-adjustable bearings. I never did find the
wheel and the trailer arrived home on the back of a truck. My complaints in the suspension supplier's shop were ignored, until I got a bit
louder and put a couple of customers off buying anything - all of a sudden they offered me replacements from their much more expensive taper roller
range.
I too was abroad when noise started, but luckily was back in the UK when it let go and temporarily abandoning the trailer, I got to the services and
called the breakdown company ten minutes before midnight (when the cover was due to run out!)

I found this link on this site by doing a search
could be usefull for Claire ?
Quenton Hazell lists the following
Mk1 escorts QWB113c except mexico and rs2000 which are Qwb 114c
MK2 escorts are QWB115c except rs2000 which are QWB114c
Cortina MK3 4 and 5 are QWB115c
Capris are all QWB114c except the 3ltr v6 from 11/71 to 8/81 these are QWB416.
This doesn't help you with sizes but it's a start with the info you might need.
Someone else may know if the hubs are the same throughout the range and only the bearings are different.

I"ve been and bought a bearing - Brezan had it in stock ( ! ) , so it's now in bits............and now the bad bit.......
It's not the bearing thats dead - its the hub The bearing has been spinning in the ally hub , which is now badly worn . The noise was the
disc rubbing on the calliper bolts since the hub is now sitting about 1mm closer to the upright .
The only roadside fix I can try now is Locktight - just waiting for a very nice Dutch chap to finish his breakfast , then nip me to Brezan (just 5
minuts up the road.....) , and see what they have .
Bearing fit Locktight , and 2 M12 washers needed !

LocTite do a specific bearing fixative (or used to) that should help. I've had it hold for a long time when I thought the bearing had no chance.
You just have to gve it time to cure before using/loading.

The guys at Brezen didnt think that liquid metal would do the job..........so we have been all over Apeldoorn , first to a bearing shop to find an
over-size bearing (no luck) , he said Locktight wouldnt work as it only fills a 1/2mm gap (and the hub is more worn than that )
So next to a motor re-conditioners - to see if they could machine the hub and fit an insert - and they couldnt (wouldnt....) do it .
Unfortunatly they wouldnt let me show them how its done
So................back to Brezen for liquid metal and brake cleaner...................I'm typing this as it sets , just hoping it holds untill I
get home !

No chance of getting a replacement upright? Must be able too?
I feel your pain, being abroad with these issues is 10 times worst!

Could I suggest a buying AA european cover and then a relaxing day or two doing nothing to make sure the cover has started. Call them and get a lift
home?

The upright is fine - its the hub that is knackered - plus the upright is a cut-down Escort strut (Fishers standard part)
The bearing is in and glued - I've bunged a bit of heat at it to set it a bit better - and it looks to be running about true......
I dont think the AA would let me join , then bring me home from Holland , when I was allready in Holland when I joined (if that makes sense ?) - plus
I am allready in the RAC but I dont have european cover (never needed it before )

It´s not quite near but maybe worth a try: Fury Sportscars, a Fisher Fury dealer. Also builds and rebuilds kits and probably has a lot of spares lying
around. He´s about 1,5 hour north of Apeldoorn.
Owner is Harm Boerma. Adress is Hoofdweg 2, 8424PL Elsloo. Telephone: 06-55545523. Email: furysportscars@home.nl

A bodge that I was taught years ago when bearings were loose in the hub was to go round the inside bore of the hub with a hammer and center punch to
raise the surface to grip the bearings a bit better, as said it is a bodge but it works . Together with a bit of Loctite it should get you home .
