High heat protection barrier ideas needed
Afternoon all
Does anyone have any knowledge of something i can use to go between my exhaust headers and coolant pipes to prevent the headers damaging them? They
are very close/touching and its too tight an area to re route the coolant pipes. Its a BEC. Ive heat wrapped the headers but need additional
protections.
Ive considered the heat fabric that you find on the inside of a bike fairing but dont think its suitable for direct contact?
Any ideas?

I am afraid that if the pipes are or are virtually touching you will have to re route the hoses - it doesn’t matter what you wrap, coat or apply -
that condition simply will not work long term and will fail
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but those pipes need to be well away from the headers

Cheers for the reply Andy.
I will look again tomorrow with fresh eyes and see what i can come up with.
Would using Ali coolant pipes where it is touching or very close be any good?

Using Ali for as much of the coolant runs as possible is the way forward
Each run works like a mini radiator dispersing heat
However
If it’s that close it will work the other way round soaking heat
What engine/chassis do you have

We can bend alloy tube to pretty much any shape to achieve clearance and bead roll ends ready for hose joiner

Ah ok - it’s going to be tight but we’ve plumbed tighter
Send me the photos and we will come up with something for you
We have done a fair few single seaters and they normally involve some thinking outside the box

There are 3 methods or heat transfer convection, conduction & radiation, with your setup you are providing the best you can get for all 3.
If you can get an air gap between the exhaust and the coolant pipes you then have an option to wrap, shield and ventilate.
A heat shield can be coated with a reflective surface to help.
It’s often about using multiple solutions to achieve a greater effect.

pretty hot.

That's only half the story, all that says to me is that the material does not melt when in contact with those temperatures, it does not tell the
how much heat it passes through, for that you need some numbers for thermal conductivity.
Them tiles stuck to the underside of the space shuttle is what you need., hence my suggestion of looking at ceramics.
Sorry I don't have any expertise in this area so you need to do the research yourself.

Look for Stratoflex hose insulation....
It is used in jet engines.
Beware of what you wish.. for it may come true....
