us certification

I've been looking around to find the procedure for legalizing a kit car in the U.S. but haven't been able to find any info. I'm in Illinois/Indiana if that matters, but there doesn't seem to be a handy manual like for SVA. Plus, I don't think that many people register kit cars here, compared to the U.K. If you have any suggestions I would really appreciate it, thanks.

Piece of cake

Here are the administrative rules for Indiana that tell what to do (apply for a vehicle identification number and have the vehicle inspected by a policeman):

Very similar to Ohio, except that you have it even softer on the vehicle inspection. Know any policemen? Be sure to keep all your receipts and be ready to pay sales tax on purchased parts, if you haven't already.

Here's the application for a VIN:

You might want to join the Locost NA group on Yahoo and see if there are any other Indiana builders. Don't know of any offhand:

Welcome aboard!

Here's a page about Illinois' procedure, which looks a bit less clear-cut:

http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/vehicles/apply_custom_rod.html

Think you'd fall into the category of "specially constructed vehicle" at the bottom of the page.
