Proximity detector

(This is sort-of Locost related, as that's where I want to use the technology)

I would like to build an immobiliser system that is deactivated when a particular key, token, fob or other gizmo comes within range (as found in posh Mercedes, for instance). Can any of the electronics boffins on this forum point me to appropriate technology? Details of known devices, methods, modules would be gratefully appreciated.
I'm not worried about the geeky/techie side of things, as I've already made a self-designed immobiliser. I just want something a bit more whizzy!

rgds,

David

there are alarms that can be had for around £50-80 iirc that work on a transponder and an inductive loop or something. if the loop is in the tranny tunnel and fob is in your pocket when you sit in the drivers seat it de-imbolises the engine.

Trying ot think who has one - maybe wadders?

Ned.

this sort of thing?

That sort of idea - just that I want to find out how to get hold of the transponder/sender bit of the technology. My current system uses a touch-key, which is what I'd like to get rid of.

Anyway, I'm not letting an immobiliser fitter near my wiring!

friend of mine did a bit of magic with a reed switch and a magnet. hid the switch somewhere in the car accessible by the driver. driver gets in and puts in key and turns on car, but it won't start. waves magnet near switch and, presto, it starts!

reed switch controls relay which swtches power to starter. or it could switch power to the ignition system. or whatever. reed can be hidden most anywhere.

simple, crude, but effective.

i did the reed switch thing a long while ago with a fiesta. put it behind the ford badge on the grille - you touched a magnet to it before getting in. pulls in a relay. touch a magnet to another reed in another position, and relay pulls out.

works well, and cheap!

ps

had one of those inductive loop things on my jag, you have to wave the fob near the coil thats under the carpet by the tranny tunnel - needs to be fairly close. the magnet idea would have worked just as well!!!

We have the reed thing on our Locost, I thought we needed it for the SVA (the bit about security).

The reed in glued onto the inside of the tunnel, put the magnet near it to deactivate the immobiliser and there's a button on the dash to reactivate it, also a flashing LED on the dash.

I put the magnet into one of those alarm keyfobs.

I was looking for something a bit more advanced than that! What I had in mind is a loop of wire round the driver's part of the cockpit, so that if I get into the car with the gizmo in my pocket I can start the car without a key.
The other immobiliser (MI600) seems only to respond when the transponder is a few inches from the wire loop behind the dash, which doesn't quite do what I want. It also seems to involve the door lights, which I ain't got!

Any more good ideas?

David
