Hello !! Advice Plz :)

hi, ive been interested in the idea of the locost for a while it looks great and i love the idea of build my own car how i want it..

a while ago i brought the build your own sports car book for 250 and gave it a damn good reading but untill recently i never really had the kind of work space id need to complete it, recently ive moved and was round a mates the other night and we got looking at locosts on the old tinternet and we half decided on both building our own cars in each others garages each our own way helping each other out etc

Now im worried about costs as im on fairly shite sallery but im thinking about it as an investment as well as ive seen them retailing quite highly when they sell ? have you guys found this to be true ? Im been searching the web found a few sites that offer start kits , just chassis , or comprehensive kits, any help on pointing me towards a good buy or a good site would be great??

ive seen on the tiger website the tiger cat or tiger avon i liked the idea of the tiger avon being similar to the locost and also with its own book so by combining both books i hsould be fairly covered there !!!!

also the avon doesnt specifiy which engine or specififcally zetec like the tiger cat does, i think ive made my mind up on the 1.6 CVH Turbo lump that you find in fiesta RS turbos specifically the one out of the fiestas, its a fairly tunnedable lump, turbo (something ive always wanted) and is very simialar to the 1.3 that comes with the doner cars, so im thinking turn it round, hopefully mate up a type 9 gear box 5 speed and associated rear axle and bobs ya uncle

now im sure theres many holes in that but its just an idea, and im sure you guys are gunna steer me right when i start to go wrong

also im a little affriad of changing parts of the specfic kits like the tiger, finding my self buying all the bits to find out becuase of the engine most dont fit etc

next few months will have to be research reseach research i think gotta make sure what ever we do buy and get started on will work out in the end

me and my mate live very close to thorney aparently where tiger hails from so we will pop in one week end for a test drive, gotta make sure we like driving it before we build one hehe (i just wanna see if my ass fits in it !! )

many thanks in advance for anyinfo you send my way, this all seems a bit daunting but i think with proper research before hand i should be confindent in buying the mterials and parts i need to get started

cheers Richard

your right mate i defo should get to some shows, for starters though, luegosports cars and tiger racing are just down the road from me so me and my mate will have to pop in too see them hopefully soon, that will give us a good idea about whats on offer i think and the kits they offer

just had a look at your mk sports cars site, must admit its given me some food for thought, i like the idea of it being more sierra based! maybe i could buy my mates banger for 50 notes and ill be sorted for parts hehe , but i still got my little heart set on using the 1.6 cvh instead of a 2.0 pinto, gotta have me some turbo power hehe

If you fancy a Tiger, I got one for sale for £5k.

Newark would be a great show to go to and like Snoopy says, make sure you have a good look at the current main manafacturers - MK, MNR, GTS, Mac1 and Tiger are probably some of the bext to look at.

hehe i kinda wanna build one lol thats the fun part.. scary but fun hehe

well the 1.6 turbo is the x flow chv so simialar to the mk2 escort 1.6 engine but diff head and management, injection etc i think so im hoping least amount of changing from any particualr manual ill be following lol, yet is easiliy tuneable to 200 bhp and for my first time out i think that will do nicely it has both speed... turbo... and compatability with most locost based kits

well thats my logic any ways loool

as snoopy says look at the different manufacturers kits and products.. talk to them all and make yourself a shortlist after talking to builders too..

TAKE YOUR TIME DECIDING!...and as you yourself said...do your research...Although they are handy for you..don't go for Tiger or Luego ONLY because their local...

although you fancy using the cvh turbo... widen your thoughts by saying to yourself
'what else is there out there' - (as volvorsport said) again..research is your key.

there's all sorts of engines that are suitable from bike engines, 4 cylinder car engines from many manufacturers, through to v6's or v8's....

welcome to this site..it's a fantastic source of help and inspiration..

hope this helps

i dont know how easily tuneable a 200 bhp cvh is , but you should further your engine options a bit more , altho im going turbo with mine , youll see that ulimate hp is not really what these cars are about
altho mine definitely will not be less than 350 hp , i have reasons for that tho !!

with the amount of money youll spend on the installation a wiser engine choice may be more beneficial .

How about a 1.3L turbo with 300hp?

Ok, so mines just gonna be a 1.3L but it should still have 175hp. I love Wankels.

I would just try and find whats cheap over there. Anything with 150+hp will make a car like this move pretty quick.

well an obvisous choice for me would be say for instance i went for an MK based on a seirra i could just use the engine that comes in the seirra be it 1.6 or 2.0 pinto still gunna be nippy but not turboed but thats a defo cheap route for me to go i could sort a seierra out right cheap ! fiesta turbo lumps gunna easy set me back 500 notes!!! or i could go ford zetec 1.8 or 2.0 both readily avaiable to me for less than 100 smackers now the 2.0 zetec is tunanble!! but standard its only 115 i think

not only is a v6 or v8 huge lol it will be slightly less avaible to me and quite a large engine to fit my first time out!! not only am i trying to consider performance as i gotta beat my mates car lol ive also gotta consider avaiablilty, cost, and size for fitting also avaiablitliy of compatable gear boxs / rear axle

1.6 cvh turbo is actually an expensive route becuase of the sort afterness of the engines i was hoping to geta dead one and rebuild it, might save somepennys if its burning oil lol

2.0 zetec i actually think my mates gota spare one on his drive way from a mondeo 20 quid and its mine lol certainly a cheap and easy route

ive also got a spare 1.8 16v engine from a reno 19 its bout 150 bhp with the right zorst system but how complicated would that be fitting lol and finding a gear box to match !

so although a 2.3 turboed or v8 lump would be great i think im gunna stick to being on a budget and build it accordingly to cost and to easy of fitting

Richard,

its also a good idea to read a few build diaries. It should give you a feel of how these cars go together.

As Snoopy says go to the shows and visit your shortlisted manufacturers. Try and get a ride out.

Have a look at the unfinished project list at the back of the mags - the same names pop up - why is that?? You decide.

I shortlisted Mk, Mac#1 and MNR. i cant speak any more highly of all 3. I had a tough time deciding. i didnt investigate Tiger or Luego so cant comment on them.

Take your time. It will take you 2 months ish to research, 1 day to order but a year to build on a budget so you want to be happy with your choice and aftersales service. At the shows you will see builders - they will give you an honest appraisal.

Your problem is that there is a HUGE amount of choice. That is what is so special but also initially so confusing. Choose wisely and build well and you will have an investment (should guarantee you cash back if nothing else). Choose wrong and you have written off a chunk. Also look at the manufacturers that do turnkey cars - you wont get that amount of cost back but you will see what is worth what. You will probably re-coup more back if you build a Westie or C'ham but initial costs will also be high - out of my league.
Engines - where do you start??? BEC or CEC - this is your first fundamental choice. budget is 2nd decision. I went for Pinto as its initially cheap. I can upgrade later but this is only to satisfy my thirst for winter projects - i love the building. I havent even drove a se7en yet! Ill be pinching the keys to my fathers Mk soon hopefully (its a 1660 x-flow and immense fun - do you need more?)

Only you can decide - but enjoy it and make the manufacturers work for your order.

Oh - nearly forgot - controversy time - Northern engineers are the best! (North = Nottingham upover)

thanks for all your advice guys

hehe two months of research also two months of saving loool

Im liking the mk indys, the whole idea of it being sierra based! i wanted a kit where i could buy a doner car buy the frame then transfer parts over building the car rather than something someones made and im just buying bits, sierras readily avaiable and i could get a good drivable one for 100 - 200 then utilise both the engine and all parts and i know if i have the whole car, i wont be short any bits

few questions though

although at mk theres a basic kit of just £999.99 theres still a lot of bits that arnt in the kit and that arnt on the doner car, im assuming that a complete kit from them is the Mk Indy deluxe kit and a doner car ?? and then a few items that require alterations and obvisouly any bits/tools/paint extra i require on top ??

what im getting at is that after the £2500 for the kit and after the 200 ish for a doner car would i be expecting any more big bills before the ruff completion of the kit car

also ive seen the indys built with bike engines but say i decide on the 2.0 pinto engine will ive have to tell mk about this so they can make it with mounting points for the 2.0 ?

lol thats not to bad so is the fiberglass painted then is there a limitation on colours too choose ?

also i see you is based in nottingham or near ish any way lol thats not too far away, im NR kings lynn in Norfolk so i may take a trip one sat to come see ya and talk about the kits you offer an have a go in one of ya beasties

i thought the sierras even the 2.0 have drums at the rear or do people just get another set of hubs calipers and carriers from the front of another sierra do they and then just fit it to the rear?

discs do look nicer
