What does your car weigh?
What does the average locost (book chassis) & 1600 Kent weigh?
Mine was weighed today.........540Kg
Is that light or heavy?

sounds light for a car engined locost. Have you put much effort into keeping the weight down? What device was used to weigh it?

My standard 1600 Kent locost is 600kg - but I made no particular effort to keep weight down (e.g. steel floor, steel tunnel panels, etc).
Still goes fast (but engine gave roughly 90 bhp on a rolling road)!

440kgs wet.
157 bhp.
132 @ wheels.
should be a bit lighter after winter rebuild, new hubs, shocks, shorter springs.

Kango,
Dont put your engine down. The Haynes manual for the mark 2 Escort has the 1600 Kent Crossflow pushing out 84 HP.
Thats a lot more than your supposed 60Hp or is it just that your engine's shagged?

420kg wet - no heater, no full screen, with older CBR1000F (about 20kg heavier than a modern bike engine). Whilst not a Locost in the truest sense I
did not spend any significant amounts to achieve this.

You can get 160 out of a crossflow.
Takes a lot of money though. I know of one that does about 160BHP, but its tricker than Paul Daniels and Debbie McGee put together.

Our ZX-12R engined Indy weighs in at approximately 490Kgs wet with 152 bhp at the wheels.
That's a little over 300 bhp/tonne...

Deimos (Rover V8) weighs about 700kgs - soon to have twin turbos and 300(ish) bhp or 420 ish bhp tonne

200bhp is possible out of a normally aspirated xflow. Just write the (large) cheque out to 'Mass'...

As a comparison and as I've actually weighed it
Striker IRS chassis. 535kg wet and half a tank of fuel (no driver).
Just a fly screen fitted. 20V 4AGE, type 9 GBX, Sierra diff, drum disc drive shafts.

Was only concerned because I had a number of 500 Kg in my mind (don't know where I saw it) but I used 2mm walled tubing and thought that would
have been the reason I missed the 500Kg.
I also have no screen and all internal pannels are ali.

OOhh... Mines BIGGER than YOURS!!
V8 Viento, about 750-800Kgs.
Spoilt by 124Kg of Ballast behind the Steering Wheel, and 127Kgs in the Passenger Seat (this is 6ft 5" of Son)
Rolling roaded at 179Bhp... (But still need some more)
Now you know why I NEED a V8
Mind you, it still goes well considering the payload.

Interesting discussion. What this photo does not show is the 330 pound steel plate that is bolted to the bottom of this car to bring the weight up to
1775 pounds. That's 350 pounds over D mod minimum weight.
Also, the transmission was broken so the whole event was run in high gear, starts and all. The protested car was second in D Mod, and second in E
mod, with no changes except driver.
This car has been in develoment for 35 years.
One more thing. The motor is stock except for the after market cams.

This car weighed over 1850 lb to be allowed to run in two autox classes. Light weight is only part of the equation. The ability to get the power to
the ground and driving skill are equaly if not more important. Overweight/broken/stock eng and still took 2nd in both classes.
