mk steering rack

hi there
further my post from friday about my sva retest fail
as i have not got alot of time to sort out the steering rack problem i have on the car now which is a modified sierra one

would a mk2 escort rack fit ok without modification to an mk indy like this one from rallydesign

I don't think so other wise you will end up with major bump steer issues

ok my mk would not self center and the wheels rubbed on the front wishbones and the inspector tried to help and as he adjusted the track rod ends the tie rods unscrewed from the rack which the inspector said should not happen and it should have some sort of locking device to stop the tie rod coming of the rack

Actually the joints *are* in the right place.

But the mounts are totally different.

I'd focus on sorting what you have currently.

I don't think there's any locking device on my rack.

Once it's tightened up, the join between the metals is bashed with a hammer and punch to deform them both slightly and lock them together.

oh ok
i did read the sierra manual and there is no mention of any locking nuts or pins

so could the inspector be wrong?

The inspector was wrong, there is no lock pin etc on the sierra rack.

James is correct, you can see the indent where you deform the joint into when you 'hit with a big hammer'.

All you need to do is do it up triple-F tight with a big pair of Mole Grips and use a good strong threadlock/retainer and it should be fine.

Don't know about the sierra rack in particular but plenty racks have the track rod fitted without a mechanical locking device, Merc Sprinter and Ford Transit off the top of my head.

I would refit the track rod using medium strength loctite and ensure it is correctly tightened.

Ball joint should be staked into the groove on the end of the rack but as already suggested clean , degrease and use loctite and make sure it's tight

oh ok hopefully that has saved a few quid getting a new rack

the only problem will be convincing the inspector as he was not very open discussion

and also sort out the self centering ahhhh

Stu, where in Bristol are you located? I had the same problem when I SVA'd mine. If you like I can come over to you and we'll have a go at fixing it the way I did mine without having to replace any parts.

At least he saved a potentially nasty accident; if the inner ball joint was loose in the end of the rack then normal suspension movement and steering could have gradually unscrewed it...

If there is any argument then you may be able to get written confirmation from Ford.

yes i agree he did save me a nasty accident which im grateful for im glad i did not drive it there

i was just stating that he was adament there should be a locking device there

use a large set of stilsons to tighten it up. some people fit valve springs to assist the self centreing this also reduce lock and would prevent the wheel rubbing
