sierra???
hi, just come back from looking at a sierra 1.8 glx, with a cvh engine, ideal for my donor car. the bodywork is in gread condition, done just over
100k miles.
however there is a prob:
when u rev it, some blue smoke appears - the guy said it is the valve seat gaskets, and should cost £50 including a head re-grind. also. the engine no
doesnt match the logbook - is this a big problem, as i will want to get an age related plate instead of a 'q'. he said you can re-register
the log with the new engine number in.
i knocked him down to £40.
the rest of the car seems in excellent condition, but im not sure just how big these 2 problems are.

well, its got to be said £40 is pretty cheap even if you bin the engine. You get a good selection of parts. I didnt think the CVH engine was ideal.
Isnt it quite tall? not sure anyway. Plus, theres no guarenteeing that the smoke is from valve seats.
But, as i said, for £40 it doesnt really matter if the engine is bummed out.

Tom,
Send the log book back to Swansea with the new engine number and you will be ok.......providing the engine isn't stolen of course.
I have one in the workshop in case you have your doubts rattled a bit but no smoke.

How do you identify which type of engine is fitted to your sierra donor. I've got this info> but is there any easier way?

Ford Sierra CVH 3 Digit engine code maybe found on one of two cylinder block lugs, to the left or right of exhaust manifold. Alternative locations are
two pads, one on cylinder head between plugs 1&2, and one on rear face of block above clutch housing.

Ford Sierra V6 3 Digit engine code may be found on cylinder block lug adjacent to number 4 spark plug. (front RH bank viewed from front).

the easiest way by far is to post a picture on here, someone will undoutedly know within minutes...

In my experience a puff of smoke when you start the engine is what the man says it is,but if you still get smoke when the engine is warm then it is
fairly warn out.In the past i have honed the bores and fitted new rings and this has cured the problem but it doesn,t last forever and it saves a
rebore and new pistons.

youve made up my mind for me - after all, £40 isnt a huge amount of money, and i will be able to source a lot of parts off this car.

just out of interest, i dont spose any one knows the bhp of the 1.8 cvh do they? there seem to be more of these around than the good 'ol

Slightly less than the equivalent Escort 1600 cvh version -- the Sierra head is design for emmisions and torque really not quite an ideal sportcar
engine.
That why I am using a 1600 CVH from an 89 Orion, the fwd engine is different in a number of respects but if at a later date I decide to go Zetec or
ZVH a large chunk of the installation problems are already solved.

Yes about 90bhp...
Have gasflowed and skimmed the head on mine, and fitted a Weber DGV carb, goes quite nicely, but should have lightened flywheel, i'm too lazy to
do it now!!!!!!!!!
