Your summary of 2010

As it may be my last post until 2011 (Oi! stop cheering), thought I'd post my locost car related summary for this year. You can ofcourse add your summary otherwise this thread will get very lonely.

If you recall, in October 2009, I had the engine overheat in my 1660 cc ford crossflow F27 car. The engine needed replacement valve guides which was done and is back together.

I replaced the Escort MkII radiator with a much much bigger aluminium radiator (Peugeot 206) and plumbed it in including header tank and fancy red silicone hoses.

Due to the wider radiator, I had to re-route the steering - this meant lengthening the steering column and using a shorter link to the steering rack, again cut and sleeved.

I had this welded up but I am not convinced that it is strong enough - the amount of weld is tiny compared to the cross-section of the tube/column. I know a man who welds digger buckets of 2 inch thick steel so will get him over for a looksee and redo the welds.

So that is it, miles driven: 0

Got the Z1000 MOTd after plucking up the courage to get back on it after 10 years!!

Couldn't get carbs to idle correctly so total mileage ridden: 40 ish - to and from MOT place twice.

Well as you may know I wrote my car off in France last year so I had the task of rebuilding it and getting it VIC'd and MOT'd. All this I managed by 29th April.

Since then I have driven:

Stoneleigh
Newark
Stafford

Annual holiday to Spain in the car and had a great time.

Trip around North Wales in October.

A few trips around local area.

Total miles driven 4500.

Now looking forward to next year.

Regards

Bob

Mmm done a fair bit this year, and also spent 000's

Replaced heating boiler with a condenser, sited on the staircase instead of kitchen.

Had new kitchen fitted.

In the process of having new living room carpet and suite - no Christmas decorations

Car wise

Replaced the engine bay wiring.

Replaced the expansion tank with an alloy one which works, the old brass one kept splitting solder joints.

Did a lot of work tidying the interior.

Replaced the cube fuel pump with an electronic version, and filter king.

Took the triple Webers off and replaced with twin SUs.

Miles driven, about 1500

Changed my car plans from pure book to fitting CBR1000 engine. Got ripped of by Jambojeef on a turbo kit. Fitted chequer plate floor, finished reconditioning back axle and suspension now fitted and looks quite nice in yellow and black. Got ally for sides and rear panel, almost fitted. Got rest of bodywork ready. Just about got the rest of the bits, apart from seats.

Busy and very expensive year

Doubled the size of my house - builder put up a watertight shell and I've done eveything else except wiring (to get my cert) and plastering - there is no way I'm ever going to be a plasterer. We're moving in to our new bedroom to-day.
Wrecked my garage to build extension - guess what next year's project is!

Got the Auster flying (first time since 1966) and fully certified in February. Still haven't got any where nearer my PPL though.

Finally fitted the twin Webers on the car. Much improved but still tweaking. I probably managed about 750 miles on local lanes and around the Peak District.

Looking forward to a new year when I am no longer a full-time builder, but I've spent all of my retirement lump sum now, so everything is going to be locost.
so cheap hols in caravan
finally make some weather gear for the Locost
source logs for wood burner
move Dad's Coronet lathe and do some wood turning
replace bathroom ( that's not going to be cheap!)
build new garage

Jeff

Very therapeutic process, thanks for suggesting this.
Here is my summary!

Aimed to build a garage and sort out wood burning fire in living room.

Built a spanking engine out of old sidecar racing outfit parts. Kept engine in shed.

Took car on track-day to Abingdon. No grip, rubbish suspension, great fun, destroyed water pump but got home.

Became a school governor

Swapped old SVA engine for new engine. Fitted front ARB, stiffer springs, popped on ACB10's.

For the test drive, went to Llandow for track day (350miles in weekend). Met some great folk, awesome day, some oil surge, engine using oil (boo), finished off the tyres.

Bought accusump, changed gsxr600 throttle bodies to gsxr1000 throttle bodies and built a new airbox with secondary injectors.

Our sons learned to swim

Upgraded MS1 to MS2.

Modified MS software and built new hardware to allow stock gsxr trigger wheel.

Won 5 years funding for a project at work

Installed rear ARB

Got school building project off the ground and funded

Started on the turbo conversion

Aiming to sort out garage and wood burning fire in living room in 2011

Hmmm, wish you hadn't started this... I'm a bit depressed when I think about this year!

On the negative side- after redundancy I still haven't found a decent job that I actually want to do. Have done a few different things but none have inspired me enough to take them up full time. Consequently I'm continually too poor to do anything I want to do and it's a constant source of friction with my very patient girlfriend. (And I refuse to sign on!).
This includes getting the Locost back on the road (needs a grands worth of tax, MOT, insurance and wheels/tyres!).

On the positive side I won silver at the Savate Kickboxing World Championships.

I fitted a kitchen very nicely for a friend- looks really good. Decorated another friends sitting room- looks really good. Have nearly finished my parents bathroom and it looks very nice so far.

Am looking forward to New Year's Eve though.

Blimey! Is that really all I 've done this year???

Cheers,
James

well..........

My son was born at the end of April - which is the best thing ever!
After 14 months of being unemployed I got a job last week doing what I actualy do for a living again!
Oh and I swapped my kit car stash for an MX5 which makes me smile everytime I drive it

........... but apart from that it's been another thoroughly miserable year!! - mind you last year was even worse so I'm expecting 2011 to be a decent year.......... think it's about time I deserved one!

Started the year on the dole.

Found a new job and packed in after 4 months. Crap!

Bought a Shogun... best thing since sliced bread for this weather.

Stoneleigh show, cold and wet...

Newark show nice warm and dry...

Historic's at Oulton, absolutely fantastic!

Passed HGV C&E in September.

Jobbing for a poo agency....

Just bought a new 50" plasma

All in not as bad as I thought seeing as I don't have any resemblance of a permanent or good job.

I suspect 2011 isn't going to be much better.

Merry xmas all,

Steve

Feel for you MikeR

I got made redundant from my 12 year job this time last year, put on garden leave until March 23 2010. Sat at home depressed and very annoyed as i was positive the reasons they got rid of me was wrong (to save money yet i was the longest serving member = more cost to get rid of?) and they started 3 new guys who would have been easy to get rid of and were lazy IMHO. They said i was incharge of one of the projects but i wasnt, really annoying is i asked if this was going to happen when the project leader left 2 years ago and was told 'no'. Then to use this against me was not on, at every stage they made things as bad as possible (letters late, ignoring me and so on).

Got a replacement job in April with a rival company, knew they had a bad rap on staff but thought it couldnt hurt to try it. How wrong was i? they treaty staff really badly and i left 5 months later with no job secured elsewhere. I was close to suicide (no joke). Also made a decision to appeal my last redundancy in March after they withheld my redundancy money without any reasons. Took them to court, was really hopefull i was going to win as we ripped them apart in the court room showing the paperwork was fabricated and they didnt follow their own proceedure. BUT couldnt fit it into one day so had to go back (another £1000 from me then). Judge said she couldnt remember what happened last time and judged they did everything correctly!! i am still in shock now, she couldnt have made it any worse and said i was to blame!

I now have no time or respect for the law, its changed me forever. Might aswell have flipped a coin and saved me £3750 in costs which was out of my £3990 redundancy.

Car wise i replaced my ZX12 engine as the change from my CBR1000F showed the ZX12 engine was an oil burner. New engine took a day to change and has been perfect since.

Ripped a set of tyres in 1500 miles with it and now cant replacing them

2010 is a year that has tought me a real hard lesson in life, Dont try and impress anyone as it gets you no loyalty from them so better to join the rest of the polulation and go and grab it all for myself at everone elses cost.

To top my year off, my phone broke so i lost all my contacts, then cancelled the AA membership i had for 10 year to help with my financial problems and then broke down! lol i had to walk home fromt he gym in the snow after a leg session. But saw the funny part of it.

I feel like that part in 'me, myself and irene' when jim cracks @ 20 seconds

Worked a LOT
Found a new girlfriend around February
Argued with new girlfriend a LOT
Fixed up front of house
Fixed up back of house
Been out in the Locost a fair few times
Broke down in the Locost lots of times due to clutch problems every time
Tapped (literally) my car into the back of another causing my number plate to break and ended up losing 9 years ncb
Visted Stoneleigh
Visited Santa Pod
Visited Newark
Drank around 20-25 pints of beer due to stomach and kidney problems
Not managed to get doctors appointment for above without giving 10 weeks notice

All in not too bad, a bit of a 1-1 result I think.

Christ this is depressing reading

This year has been a bit 'meh' really. Outside of work it's been great, little'un will be two next week, so this year has been filled with plenty of firsts, he's running about and talking, harassing the dog, and utterly obsessed with hammers Number two is now on the way as well. We're settling in nicely in a new house in a new area, although the trade off is a smaller leakier garage than I had before.

I got some time and enthusiasm together and really picked up the pace with the car, and finally passed IVA this month about two weeks shy of four years after I picked up the kit. If the DVLA pull their finger out I'm hoping to take it to Brooklands on new years day.

Work has been pants though. Went through a round of redundancies. I kept my job, but to be honest I think I'd rather have been made redundant, I haven't enjoyed the job for a while now and I've got lots of service in current job so would have got a hefty sum. Instead I've seen the dept that I run go from 6 down to 2 despite being run off our feet and being able to show that I had the work to justify another engineer. Hoping for a change of job early next year though, so 2011 could be a better year

4 year 457 Visa finished Febuary
Applied for Permanent Residency Febuary
PR granted May
Worked in Adelaide May/June early July
Daugther's 16th birthday August
Bought house November
Got the new 360 for birthday November
Looking forward to Christmas by the pool, if it ever stops raining
Not a busy year work wise, hopefully company will win 1 or 2 of its tenders, then will be really busy next year

Nothing much car related, Proton Gti still good fun to drive, rear hatch slightly creased from inattentive cyclist , if he was a car could have exchanged details because he ran into back of me

Have a safe and Happy Christmas, and a better 2011.
