Have a good look at the old JAP powered cars at hill climbs, all exposed valve gear, strange looking external valve springs 500cc singles.

The thump their way up, surprisingly fast with clever weight saving ideas such as centre mounting wheels directly onto open half shafts losing the axle tube and mounting the bearing into the leading arms.
