Linkages, pivots, and such stuff

My boot lid will not open all the way up because the roll bar cross-member will be in the way. I have this idea in my brain for a boot lid hinge/pivot system that will lift the lid a bit, then swing back, out and up. Trouble is, I have no idea how to get started with the design.

This is the sort of thing that design engineers do all the time, so I was wondering how someone would get started on something like this?

I'm not looking for software - just a few clues on how to approach a problem like this. It would be something to do on my daily commute!

cheers,
David

Do you have a pic so I can get a feel for what you need. If it is just a single bar diagonal could you make the hinge slide. So as you lift the boot box lid you slide it away from the diagonal along the hinge plane? Then lift it fully once it is clear.

As I was typing my original post I thought of exactly the same thing! Have a pivot at the back edge that runs in a horizontal groove (maybe with a dip down at the back to push against the seal).

Damn! I'll have to think of something else to amuse me on the train!

Only joking - I'd still like to know how people approach a puzzle like this.

me, id stare at bonnet hinges for a while, as they are similar, and maybe window hinges, then fiddle with cardboard or metal
