silencer material
I'm going to make a silencer for my intake. I'm going to experiment with different ideas but first of all I'm going to try a
straight through design a bit like an exhaust. I'll make the pipes from some plastic that I already have but I need some ideas for what to use
for the padding.
Obviously I can't use fibreglass because I don't want to suck any into my engine. What other commonly available materials might work?

It sounds like you need to be thinking along the lines of soundproofing stuff.
Ive seen noisy machines being enclosed in foam lined boxes before. Maybe something like open cell foam rubber with a mesh frame inside might be
work.
Do you need to consider fuel proof at all? Just wondering if it could be subjected to vapours that may limit your choices.

Why not use a simple paper airfilter in a box?

i had to make an airfilter once because of the space i had. i used some foam blocks
from the aquarium shop at my local garden center they are about 150x150mm
they sell all difrent sizes and types
dont no if it will help but if you have to go to the garden center it might be worth a look around

Might be worth trying a ram pipe type inlet to the air filter as this tends to cut down intake roar on some engines

I am happy with the filter that I have and it has a nice radiused inlet. I'm making the silencer for fun really. The best idea for silencer
wadding is the type of foam used in seating. I don't know if it is the right stuff to use though.

I built one and tried it out tonight. 2" perforated pipe (well my exhaust is 2" so why not) in a 3.5" pipe. Tried with foam,
without foam, without the inner pipe and end baffles.
It works.
It is a bit quieter without the foam and quieter still with. So much so that I've say I couldn't hear the induction noise. I could hear
exhaust rumble at the low end and generator whine at the top instead.
It restricts airflow though. The 3.5" pipe has the same flow rate as 2x 2" pipes or the foam filter with no box. As ever, I've
learned a couple of things but not got exactly the result I was looking for.
