can any one tell me, how new or old does a car have to be to bin the cat, for sva

Right, I might be wrong and I am sure someone will correct em but it is not as simple as you would hope.
The emission levels are dependant upon the age of your engine (which you have to prove and are as follows:
Details of the emission cut off dates and levels are;
1st August 1986 – 31st July 1992 1200ppm HC, 3.5% CO2
1st August 1992 – onwards as per the emissions publication (if listed, else)
1st August 1992 – 31st July 1995 1200ppm HC, 3.5% CO2
1st August 1995 – onwards requiring cats 200ppm HC, 0.5% CO2
Baiscally, if your engine is older that August 1992 not car required, if it is newer than August 1995 definite cat required, in between if it is
listed in the MOT testing handbook then it is tested to those limites, else the middle bracket above.
Long and short, if it had a CAT the 99% certain you will need the CAT.

paradoxia thats a fab reply, but if it is a bike engine what happens then? do even the newest bikes have cats fitted yet?

If it is a bike engine in a car and newer than 95, then it has to comply with car emmissions. This means that even a bike cat would fail. You will
need a car one.
Checkout the shop page of mk engineering and at the bottom he has a suitable cat. His is £80, I managed to get mine for £52 delivered from the ebay
usa.
I was lucky in that the buyer marked the packake as a sample so I escaped the import duty etc.

Source of the engine is irrelevant, I'm afraid. Once it's in a car, it has to meet the emissions for a car engine of that ago.
