The time has come

Firstly a big hello, the cards behind the bar so pick your poison.

A couple of years ago my dad came home with the Ron Champion bible that I promptly took off him and proceeded to read it, and read it again and then a few more times for good measure. It was at about that time that we decided we both wanted one.

Due to funds and more critically space we decided to wait until my parents had retired and had moved into somewhere out in the country with out buildings and lots of space. Well this time has come and along with this a barn with enough space for 10-12 cars.... perfect!

Now my first thought was using a sierra xr4x4 and having a 4x4 kit car, then a rwd with something like a V8, then a 2L turbo jobbie but as the main thing with these is power to weight then a bike engine looks like what I’ll be settling on.

I was planning to build the whole thing from scratch but I’m now thinking on buying a chassis, this way if I struggle to make a part I can get the proper part from the chassis kit manufacturer.

The time scale I’m looking at will be realistic and the budget... well lets face it a good deal more than the 250quid in the book. If the jobs worth doing it's worth doing well.

My engineering skills are good, as are my dads so I firmly believe the two of us should be able to make it through... with a good but of help from you lot.

if your looking to buy a chassis then i would go with Mk (the new one) or MNR.

Note to all: I really don't know when to leave well alone. I tried to get clever with the mods, then when they gave me a lifeline to see the error of my ways, I tried to incite more trouble via u2u. So now I'm banned, never to return again. They should have done it years ago!

If you have the skills and equipment, there can be nothing more satisfying than building your own chassis. However, it can add considerably to the overall build time and if you don't already have the necessary equipment, it can work out quite expensive in comparison to buying a manufacturers chassis.

Whichever chassis you decide, you've already chosen the right engine so you won't go too far wrong.

Ok whats this new book got. Does it focus on using the sierra as opposed to the Escort?

I was looking as the GTS W7DE kit. I'm not huge but like the idea of a slightly wider chassis but every kit out there will be getting a good looking at.

The car will be for road use and tracks so i'm realy hoping for some serious performance... however having never been in one, only ever overtaken i'm not sure what i'm letting myself in for. I'm hoping for a ride soon though.

Most of the kit suppliers will arrange a ride out, if they think you're serious. Few of them will allow you to drive, but that's mainly because (a) they can't afford to run a demonstrator, and (b) these cars can bite if you don't take the time to learn how to drive them.

If you've got some owners local to you then there's a fair chance that one of them will take you as passenger...

Hitch a ride in a BEC and you'll be handing money over for a ready built chassis, quicker than you can say "should I fit a reverse?"

Hi Rob and welcome, if you can make it down to GTS on a Saturday they usually have a customers w7de there that you could get a ride in, its got a 2litre Duratec in with 230bhp

there are a suprising number of builders and owners in the folkestone/hawkinge area, a few of us are in the Kent Kitcar Club and meet on the last Friday of each month, you should come along.
