road costs vs track costs?
With my Indy off the road for the time being while I fix it I've been thinking about the costs of road use vs. track only use. As time is ever
precious I'm thinking it might be better to get say 4 track days in a year and really enjoy the car rather than the odd snatched 1/2hr on public
roads.
My rough tally for a year/2k miles road use is as follows...
£190 road tax
£150 insurance
£500 fuel
£50 MoT
£110 sundries
£1000 total
So...what is it likely to cost me for 4 track days?
I have a trailer and tow car available for free.
Does the car still need to be MoT'd?
What kind (if any) of insurance do I need?
What mods might be required to the car - e.g. fitting an oil catch tank?

oh about £1000
four days a year well that really sucks, buy a hood! I use to use my Falcon all year round, deep snow and all. Side screens, hood & heater,
what else do you need?

Weather is not an issue for me I did 3k miles in the last 12 months in the Indy ranging from glorious sunshine through to sub-zero icey drives to work
with a few down pours thrown in for good measure. Both me and the car were fine with that.
I'm looking at maximising the enjoyment I get from the car on a limited budget and very limited free time.
Public roads are strangling at th best of times so track days would probably give me more smiles/£

Track days - from £99 a day up to £200+
Don't need insurance or MOT usually (though some require it)
So 4 track days could be had for £500 + fuel .... and as the cars are really light you won't go through brake pads, tyres etc very quickly...
If you're not living life on the edge you're taking up too much room.

Roughly 150 quid for trackday (some are more, some are less) plus 50 quid or so fuel, plus towing fuel there and back say 50 quid if doing reasonable
distances = 1000 for 4 track days.
Plus of course you'll be changing tyres, oil, brake consumables etc more often.
Most people don't bother with insurance, it's not compulsory and you're only covering yourself - cost and excess negates and likely
damage you'd do unless you totalled it. just don't total it!
Don't think you need an MOT (I've never been asked to show one), it just has to be "roadworthy" i.e. not falling apart.
However, something to think about is if you're not on the road, it's hard to test tweaks out etc and generally make sure it's ready
for each track day. For example my car is currently SORN as it's been partially dismantled over winter - I've fitted a Kliktronic
shifter, but at the moment I can't test whether it functions properly because I can't use it on the road. Hoping to get MOT in the next
week, otherwise my first test is on a trackday, and I may end up spending more time d1cking about with spanners than out on track!

I'm yet to do a trackday in a 7, but in the 205gti i used to have, I have never had so much fun in a car (and yes, I have tried other things -
not good when you are tall!). The whole day, including driving 100 miles each way, cost me £140 all in (fuel, oil, track day cost, helmet hire etc).
Do it - you wont regret it.... Just pick a nice wide open track (airfield) first.

It depends on which track's you want to go to...
Oulton is quite expensive...

Good point, the car is in pieces awaiting new front wishbones (crash damage), oil catch tank, new coolant pipework and more, which will all need a
shakedown once finished.
