Look what I've ordered!

http://www.bateau.com/studyplans/MG20_study.htm?prod=MG20

I'm going to cost it all out first as I think it'll be more expensive than toy car.

Prices for some things (eg sterndrive) are quite ludicrous in this country, so I may be shipping quite a bit from the US.

Want to chuck in a modern car diesel (150bhp ish). I might even get one with an auto box and keep that (but with manual gear operation).

Anyway - shall I or shan't I, or shall I wait till a) I've studied plans and b) costed it up.

PS Wanted 150bhp diesel engine - must be like new and under a hundred quid

I'd cost it up! I expect it will be a bit like these £250 cars.

Looks interesting and definatly somerthing I'd consider myself!

Let us know how it's comes along as I'd be very interested ikn what the overall build time, cost and required skills would be.

Have you come across anything similar for a sailing boat?

Knowing nothing about boats -

Do boats have gears ? Reverse would be nice I suppose. I guess they would have for same reason a car has gears - never thought about it before

What about cooling the engine ?

I belive there is a maximum prop rotation speed when cavitation sets in.
Props are made with the BHP/torque of the engine in mind and a forward revers box which has the stepdown gear in it.

The standard peak revs of an engine is more than the required prop rotation speed needed.
If you had gears you would need a variable pitch prop

Wow, looks like a great project if you have the room and somewhere to use it.

I love boats me, My folks had a boat on the Thames since 1976 and only recently gave it up due to old age so boats are in my blood. i'd have one tomorrow but Mrs donut...she says no!

Don't forget 80gallon (360l) tank of fuel.
£400 +

Does seem a bit big.

I have a 1/2 share in a Ring 20,
that has a 35 gallon tank.
great fun.
Did look at one of these types

boat linky

But no time or money now with small one around.

I'd love to have a go at building a boat - It would help if I lived near some water though

Nice project - keep us updated

I already have They're quite expensive, and I may have to get something similar from the US

As usual, UK prices are twice US prices!

Nearly fell at first hurdle when I looked up marine ply prices last night! Might be using imported ply instead

That's a fairly doable project.

Replace the ply with foam, and use proper woven materials, and you should be able to halve the hull weight, increase strength, and cut costs.

I've built a few go fast water things, grew up with ski boats and ski racing boats.

For those who don't know boats.......

Workboats and displacement boats use step down, like low gear in a car.

High speed boats actually use a step UP, to increase prop revs. Step ups from 10>25% are common, with some running as much as 50>75%

Search your local out of the way boat yards for the outdrive, they're a dime a dozen round here. Oh, and the outdrive will have the forward/reverse built in. Similar to a dog box on a car, but a whole lot simpler.

Cheers,
Syd.

If you can't find a sterndrive, consider a jet unit. They're a lot simpler and reverse is a matter of pulling a cable to redirect the thrust. There are no expensive props to buy and you can sail in much shallower waters
