Which kit?
hey ppls,
I've been bitten by the 7 bug, but don't know which kit to go for? I went to the donington kit car show last year really enjoyed it and
saw lots of well built kits.
so any opinions would be gratefully recieved to help me make my mind up.
looking at something which is not going to cost to much to put together. my mechanical knowledge is good as i'm a qualified mechanic .
many thanx

Funny how the West London Bias Mafia all jump in with their respective car manufacturer names....

build it yourself and make it as different from the book, and as complex as you can.
Then spend a lot of time on here cos its cold in the garage

Most people here will eagerly stick up for thier own kit. I would say that as 'budget' manufacturers go Stuart Taylor, MK and Luego all
seem to have good reputations, one you go up a bit of money Dax, Westfield and Caterham all look good too. No doubt I've forgotten someone -
apologies if I have.
I'm building an MK myself, but I must admit a strong bias towards motorbike engines :-)

i'll side with steve myself, and say make your own. you can still get help from the various manufacturers, with bits that you cant/dont want to
make, but you get all the fun of building it yourself. I'd also design it as well to add some variety.
bear in mind that the bear chassis is usually less than £500, and it could take a year or more to make first time, so it is quite tempting to buy one
ready made.
for my next time, i will buy one if i do a book car, but probably make a single seater middy and as such scratch build it.
all the best anyway...!

hear hear....
it can take an age to build a chassis, if you buy one you you get a huge head start and feel like you're making loads of progress in the
beginning.
(i've made my own by the way, enjoyed it on the whole and have learned a load, its taken over a year as well)

Trev,
If you're slightly mad, make it yourself. It'll take a while longer to get on the road, but you'll know the car inside out.
If you're completely mad, follow Steve Gustersons advice (but read his website - especially about fibreglassing!!).
If you're in a hurry to get on the road, build a kit, but pay more money. Mark Evans built a Westfield in a fortnight - I reckon most on here
could do it in a week (just working evenings :0 )
Most on here go for Homebuild, Luego, MK, Tiger and so on. Your best bet would be to go and see each manufacturer, see their set up and go for a ride.
They all have slightly different styling so one may appeal more than the others.

im only half way thro me glass too
if you can master welding, building the chassis is the best bit.
decide what you want and how much time you have.
if you just want to get a car on the road, get a kit.
If you want to be able to say you did it all yourself and have the TIME a GARAGE and a WIFE / GF that UNDERSTANDS and DONT UNDERESTIMATE THE COSTS
then do it yourself.
Beware - summat like a MK might look a cheap kit, but there are LOADS of hidden items and extras. That goes for all routes.
I have heard, in the past, that ST can be rude to deal with.....

Might be easier to draw up a wish list of engine/brakes/suspension and then have a ring around to see who offers the best support for your project.
Luego/MK/Stuart Taylor etc all seem to offer good quality chassis, but it is nice to be able to ring up the factory and get good advice/help. The
first big question will have to be bike or car engine?

Getting rapidly back to the thread...
The best thing is to get yourself along to the next big kit car show, wherever and whenever that is (anyone?)
You really can't beat walking back and forth between vendors, comparing details and prices, talking to the people, and so on. In most cases you
can sit in their cars, and even arrange a 'factory visit' and a test drive if you're really keen.
cheers,
David

hey again all who have replied thanx for your opinions and suggestions.
I had a trip out to westfield late part of last year to have a go in there SDV although the quality is good i thought it was a bit too pricey.
and did pop out to tigers openday aswell i did like the avon but i've only heard bad things about the kit car the magazine review's? so
any more info from u would be great.
also any more of your thoughts on the velocity would help? had a look at the donington show looked at good kit and there factory is close to where i
work.
there my main contenders so any more opinon would be great thanx
