Local BandQ dont have the 32mm ali aerial pipe in stock but i have found some cheap mild steel exhaust pipe (new of course) of the right size.
Would that be ok to use or would it rust from the inside out?

You can stop rust by adding either antifreeze or rust inhibitor to the cooling system, one of which should be in there anyway.

The thermostat is made of steel, possibly zinc plated and they survive.

More relevant for you is that the heater pipe that sits under the rover V8 inlet manifold and the fittings are steel and generally survive pretty well, a good 20 years or so.

hmmm, they may be zinc plated too, duno ass I have never seen a new one.

Antifreeze will protect the inside and a coat of paint will protect the outside (provided it doesn't get burnt off by a manifold).

Acid etch and spray the outside (probably best to try and make sure the acid doesn't get into the inside of the tube or wash it out well afterwards). The antifreeze will take care of the inside stuff.
Only other downside is that it isn't going to exactly be light!

sorry, just look at some stock in the gragre, it is 31mm i.d and 33/34mm od
