Trolley Jack
dhutch - 6/11/08 at 11:30 AM

Ive stuck a notice in the wtd area, but assuming nothing comes up (why would you have a spare) then i need a trolley jack.

Just wondering if anyone had a recomendation, looking through machinemart they seam to have litterally hundreds with bearly anything to distiugish them!

Uncals buying as a birthday present, so i dont think the budget will streach to a bling-bling alumium one or anything silly, but there should be enough for a good one.

What are we looking for, lift height, number of pumps to the top?

Will be used on the seven and tintop etc. But nothing heavier than a tonne.

Well that answered my question in your other thread. I brought a £20 2 ton from screwfix (i think) Wouldnt trust in one my jag but use it alot on the locost

If for the Se7en/Locost check the lowest height - many will not fit under a Se7en/Locost chassis.

I got a £9.99 2 ton Aldi one last year, good for the 7 nice and low. Probably not good for a big car though.

i bought a 2 tonne semi pro one, that had a really low saddle height, which just goes under the ST, but i can't find it on the website. I know it was £34.99, pop in store if you can see it

Another thing that’s very good is that the pump handle should be able to swivel round to different angles and still pump.

Never lift a jack by the jacking arm btw, draws air in to the cylinder if you do that

I've got a Machine Mart jack, don't know which model it is but it's sturdy and it's OK for jacking up one end of a car, then pulling the car sideways (using the wheels on the jack) which is a good way of moving a car around a garage if there isn't enough room to run the car backwards and forwards to steer it into postion

saw this job lot in Augos before with axle stands, trolly and jack plus more all for £25, thuing it would be worth checking out the jack a bit more to see what the lift height ect is.

I got the £10 Aldi one too - they appear "on offer" every now & then. It doesn't go low enough to get under my locost though......
Otherwise can't knock it - perfectly servicable jack

Depends what you want to lift --- the Lidl/Aldi jobs are fine but lack stability and really don't stand up to constant use , for serious especially if you are lifting anything bigger than a Mondeo then get a proffesional jack a 3 ton job.
Even though you should always used axle stands and chocks the wheels on a jack should be wide enough track to be stable.

As my tintops tend to be big & heavy my main working jack is a Halfords 3 ton that I bought about 10 years back.
Here is the current version http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_216064_langId_-1_categoryId_165727
Machine Mart, Partco and other sell very similar ones.

We have something like this one available from Lidl for £12.99 Similar spec but only cost a tenner back in 2003. Still working fine and it's been invaluable ever since.

Seam low entry, or atleast the entry height, is proberbly a must. The Seven certainly isnt as high as the tintop and i hadnt really thought about that.

Never sean one with swiveling handle eather!

I would have just bought one, but i borrowed one from a mate (£12 autojumble jobbie) and it wasnt very good at all. Better than my current scissor jack, but not the step i wanted.
- It couldnt lift high enough to get the axle stand under the wishbone mounts eather (tintop) so i still used the scissor for the last half inch!

I have an old Bradbury 1.5 ton jack cost me £95 but worth every penny, in its time it was the Rolls Royce of trolley jacks . Has been in near constant use and apart from a couple of top ups has been perfect. Stable and safe with a fairly low platform . The cheap trolley jacks available today are disposable when anything goes wrong . PS I've had the Bradbury since 1976.
