Anyone used Autoglass to repair a chip?
hobbsy - 17/11/08 at 07:46 PM

Picked up a small chip over the weekend (even though was miles behind the car in front). Its in the drivers vision area.

Its quite small but does have very very fine short cracks emerging from it. Total size ~10mm.

Been on the Autoglass website as they are always banging on about free repairs etc.

How does this work?

What if I get them to rock up to my work place and they decide either:

a) they repair it but my insurance for some reason doesn't make it free
b) they can't fix it - so new screen? My MOT is about 9 or 10 months away and I don't think it will get all that much bigger (I know cold weather ahead etc). Might as well wait til closer to when I *need* it fixed for the MOT in case I pick up another in the meantime.

Thoughts / experiences appreciated.

I used AutoGlass to replace a windscreen last time when I was around at Worx's house.

What a frickin' disgrace. Smashed my car to bits to get the windscreen out, broke my rain sensor, threw my tax disc holder away (a present from my Dad and one I wanted to keep)

He swore throughout. Not just mild cursing but serious 'effin and jeffin'.

Scratched paintwork getting it in and out, broke the old screen to bits to remove it.

Would I trust them again? Not in a million years. Awful awful service.

I had a tiny chip in my screen - pretty small and out of my direct line of vision - i.e. not an MOT failure.

As it was a "free" repair, I thought I may as well get them out (as per the radio).

Called insurance company and then booked them out.

3 minutes after turning up "sorry, it cracked. You'll need a new screen. goodbye"

After relating the story to colleagues, apparently this can quite often be the norm if they guy can't be bothered...

personally I'd find out when a glass place are going to be in your local supermarket (they're quite often in the Asda here) and get it done then - if they don't do it right, at least they don't get the ££ for a new screen....

Did you report him ?

i had them out last week to do a repair on a chip, it now looks worse than it did before it was repaired, but in fairness it had been chiped for a while, and the bloke said the sooner the repair is done the better, as dirt etc. gets in and discolours the plastic laminate in the screen. The repair would be free if i was a private individual but as i am a vat registered business i had to pay them the vat element of the repair, it came to ten pounds something (supposedly so that i can claim the vat back, but i can't figure how i can claim back the the vat on an invoice that i have not paid, very odd) I'll be calling them later this week to tell them the repair is bobbins and i want a new screen

I did when I popped into an AutoGlass place a week or so later. Annoyingly I had KC with me and not the car they mauled. They said they'd inspect the work and follow it through but I've not been back since and they didn't look into it and phone back like they promised.

My fault for not following through but you know when you have the best intentions of sorting something out and then just loose enthusiasm for it.

I've probably left it all too late now. Not that it's an excuse but I think the bloke took a look at a few of the scratches on my car and thought....Oh well, few more won't matter!

Our work ins company use autoglass and i have to agree with the guys above. They are dog poo.
We have had one leak and another whistle when you get over 50. If you complain they just say its nothing to do with them.

i've had an autoglass replacemeant in my fiesta, and i'm also a not happy customer, messy, rough, rude, screen mists up and smeers much worse than the ford one ever did, and the car creeks going up and down curbs sugesting it's not that well bonded in

That would explain why my car now mists up from the inside then....

Can take 15 mins to dry/clear the inside of the screen if there's a big temp. drop.

Add that one to the high quality service from AutoArse....

Had them deal with a chip in my old MG B.

Asked them if they were comfy working on the car and was assured it was no problem... came back to find they had completely wrecked the chrome surrounds.

They did pay for new ones, mind you.

Had a couple of chips repaired with no bother, both times been perfectly ok. They do warn you that the screen may crack before they start a repair.

Other family members have had whole screens replaced with no problems as well.

But then I know a man who is good mates with the local autoglass bloke

locogeoff - 18/11/08 at 12:35 AM

They replaced my MR2 windscreen recently, couldn't have been happier with the service I received, there was one bloke, young but obviously the brains of the operation, and his shaved monkey, who if he follows the example of the other will turn out well.

They even phoned me when they had the old screen out at my request so I could check something at the front of the dashtop, and replaced the screen with the correct tint for an import, car now less creaky, could only be happier if they'd arranged me some complimentary executive relief whilst they were busy

As with all franchised operatons it depends on the staff, also they looked like a couple of car enthusiasts so maybee saw a kindred spirit rather than a punter

On a slightly different tack I had a new screen from RAC Windscreens and have nothing but praise for the guy who did it. Top quality job. Don't know if they do the chip repair thing too though.

David Jenkins - 18/11/08 at 09:04 AM

On yet another tack - has anyone else found that replacement windscreens don't seem to be as good as the original ones?

The original screen on my Yaris had hardly any scratches on it when it finally got hit by a stone, after around 4 years of motoring. The replacement had slight wiper scratches within a year - and I always change the wiper blades if I have a screen replaced, and if they're not doing their job.

I'm fairly convinced that the replacements are made of a softer glass...

There was one in the works car park the other week with what looked like a suspiciously medical bit of equipment sucked onto some guys chipped windscreen, so I think they do.

Couldn't see the repair after he'd finished from a couple of feet away, so seems like he did a good job.

Had the same problem with screen replacement on Honda Shuttle. Was told that quality would not be as good as original !
Seemingly new screen is "generic" and that really suprises me,it is now showing markings where wipers have been.
Regards
Mike

Yes, they are undoubtedly inferior, the worst being that they don't always fit the aperture very well which makes them look pretty awful and increases wind noise etc.

Anyone used Halfords Windscreen Repair Kit?

trogdor - 19/11/08 at 03:41 PM

I found one chip on my Van took it to kwikfit of all places, and they found another two! they did the third one for free so only paid for two.

I didn't want to get the insurance involved since it costs quite alot and as its a work van i didn't pay for the repairs myself.

You can tell the difference and they did a good job. I don't think i would trust anyone with a job on a car i actually care about tho. Would be trying find someone recommended.
