Broken Collar Bone
goodguydrew - 25/11/08 at 08:19 PM

Hi all,
I fell off my bicycle and broke my collar bone yesterday. Have any of you guys done this? How long till I can start angle grinding do you think? I hope I don't miss out on the Christmas "break".

That's the locost spirit. None of this how long can I blag off work nonsense, just how long until I can wield the angry grinder?!
Incidentally, I have no idea how long it'll take to heal.

broken bones 'generally' take about 6 weeks i think

Volvorsport - 25/11/08 at 08:27 PM

4-6 weeks .

you might be fine in two .

broke mine way back when drunk and rugby tackled myself onto a drain cover .

i was laminating fibreglass two weeks later , with the other arm of course .

Broke mine playing football as a teen. Took my collar bone 4 weeks. Although it was nearly 3 months before I recovered from the other injuries.

Broke my leg a few years ago and was working on my car 48hrs later even though I couldn't drive it.More than one cyclist has finished the Tour de France with a broken collarbone. Don't overdo it just do what you can.

Broke my right one twice (falling off bike).

Healing depends very much on the way it's broken. If the break is still in position or been pinned then it'll be healing pretty quick, I know guys who've been back training in a week and racing in 3 weeks. If the ends have moved or are shatered with multiple breaks then it came take a while. If this is the case, push to get it pinned. Mine wasn't pinned the first time and took 10 weeks to heal. It couldn't be pinned the second time becaause of the first break and took 5 weeks before I was back on the bike although I was back fixing cars at work in 2 through boredom!

No, I've never ridden your bicycle.

Look on the briht side, it could have been worse, you coold have bent the frame!!

Old boy in the office did it through some pillock pulling out infront of him and the seat belt doing its trick. Ended up off for ages but he's got a number of conditions and doesn't heal well. I think he was 6 weeks - bored rigid for most of it.

stevec - 25/11/08 at 09:33 PM

Done it a couple of years ago, took about 4 weeks to knit back together, the worst bit was just before it finally knitted it would keep jumping back apart with a clunk which was no fun. They advised against pinning it because it can give bother later in life, a natural heal is supposed to be the best,
Steve,

Thanks guys, I guess I will have some time to look through the Photo Archive.

Who has pics of a Champion book chassis with a xflow?

Andrew

BenB - 25/11/08 at 10:35 PM

Someone who's too lazy to paint their chassis to prevent it rusting... not needed with the Ford(tm) total loss oil system (a.k.a. Xflow).

i dislocated my shoulder at work 5 weeks ago and it still hurts like hell. . . you should be fixed in 4 - 6 weeks

mackei23b - 26/11/08 at 09:15 AM

Yes, been there done that, mine took about 3 months, but I broke mine into 3 bits, with the middle inch rotating round 90 degrees and sticking out at an odd angle. This was followed by surgery to fix me up.

Cheers

Ian

7 years ago i broke my hand when landing badly after a big jump on a dry ski slope.

2 weeks later i was due to do on holiday to austria skiing. a few days before holiday - went for a checkup at the hospital. i got them to remove the pot so i could go on holiday.... Everyday whilst skiing my hand swelled up so big that you couldnt see my knuckles

i still have a bony lump int the back of my hand to this day it was a good holiday though
