Double inlet, single outlet Tintop silencer???
NS Dev - 25/11/08 at 09:38 PM

For my twin engine autograsser my neighbour gave me an ideas of using a silencer from a porsche Boxster as it will flow pretty well, be well made and most importantly have two inlets of around 2.5" each and one big (3" at least) outlet.

Now, I have discovered, unsurprisingly, that used ones of these are a) thin on the ground and b) flipping expensive!!!

Anybody have an alternative suggestion in the same vein that is cheaper???

I thought MR2 and MGF but neither is big enough bore, bearing in mind I will be looking at 300hp from the two engines and each manifold will terminate in a 2.5" outlet (they are vee twins and have 2" primary pipes as std)

What about some reverse logic - a lot of tin top rear boxes have 1 in 2 out.

No idea how they flow backwards and matchin the bores might be tricky.

Just been thinking the same......the Audi TT 3.2 looks ideal BUT, as you say, I reckon they might not work backwards very well as they won't be straightforward straight through jobbies

i don't think that would work. i don't think it would flow well in reverse. i guess how well it flows is linked to the pressure, 1 to 2, you half the pressure, 2 to 1 you double. though i may be well off the mark with the pressure, but you know what i'm getting at...

What about other V6/8 engined cars for 2 in and 1-2 out...?

Rangey
Rover P1
Capri
Sierra
Big Audi/Merc/Beemer (740i maybe)

how about making one ?

i also dont think 3 inch is a big enough outlet .

NS Dev - 25/11/08 at 10:06 PM

Making one was the original plan, I'm just trying to save time and work now!

Have found an aston martin v8 vantage centre section on ebay that looks useful and cheap.

Still receiving ideas gratefully!

Why not just use two smaller (cheaper) silencers?
Say suitably size motorbike cans (Aprilia ones even)
Could mount them together under and over or one each side.

Volvorsport - 25/11/08 at 10:12 PM

youll find better luck with bus/truck sizes

i might be able to help you with some bits .

NS Dev - 25/11/08 at 10:17 PM

iank - already got two aprilia mille cans, at less than a tenner each, but together they weigh a ton and take up a lot of space in all the wrong places, and are not the right sort of shape, nor can be easily modified. It really needs a single big oval box rather than two smaller round ones.

volvo - I reckon you are right, but no idea where to start looking!! Pretty sure another chap I have seen with two TL1000 twins in a grasser is using something of truck origin, modified to be repackable. Prob is the scrutes know that twins are loud, so they always test them, and the limit is 105 now, down to 104 next year

bloody nimbys!!!

ill have a look in our scrap bin for you .

any basic dimensions ?

NS Dev - 26/11/08 at 12:43 PM

er, max length is about 650mm, height about 300mm, width about 175mm, pipe diameters, inlets will be 2 x 2.5", outlet/s can be whatever.

Capri nope - 2 separate exhausts all the way down.

My BMW E34 530 V8 had 4 exhaust manifolds, flowing to 2 cats with 2 inlets and 1 outlet each, flowing to 2 more silencers with 2 inlets finally ending up in 1 tailpipe. Hopelessly over engineered but very effective.
