THE CHEAPER OF TWO EVILS


Two recent court cases have earned the attention of newspaper readers in
South Africa. One person was fined R1 000 for not having a TV licence.
Another was released on bail for R500 after being arrested for murder.

The moral of this South African story:

if you do not have a TV licence and the inspector comes round, kill him.

You'll save R500.

As I understood it the fine for not having a TV licence was £1,000, which would be R13,000.
A little bit steeper!

It has been known for a good while that if you try to defraud the institutions you get shafted, whereas if you assault, rob, kill, etc, you just get a slap on the wrist!

i wouldnt dream of getting a tv license. The Beeb is crap, i object to the condesending tone of the comercials, plus some say it violates the human rights act.

if the tossers ever turn up on my doorstep, i shall ridicule them, and tell them to sod off. like they have right of entry to 'inspect' your house...

Actually I've been told that they have to ask to enter your house. If you say no they have to go away and get the police to accompany them back.....

Should give you enough time to cut the plug of the tv and take it up stairs!

Not sure how this work with regard to warrants - ie i thought police had to have a warrant to enter and search a house.

The other one I heard is that they can't go round after 7pm.

Not sure how true any of this is, just idle pub conversation.

A friend of mine hasn't had a tv for 6 years and gets letters all the time telling him he hasn't got a license. At the house we lived in before this one I used to get them threatening me with prosecution as I didn't have a license for No15, thing was we lived at No19 and did have a license.
I think it's wrong to be prosecuted for just owning the equipment to receive a signal, I thought the basis of law was that you are innocent until proven guilty.

yeah, i once wrote and told them it was for the N64, they never bothered me after that.

my sister got prosecuted cos it was tuned in, but she really didnt use it anyway. they let her off when she agreed to get a licence.

police have to have permission from you or a court order to enter your house, though sometimes they may just come in if the door is open etc and no one tells them not to. They thought i was robbing myself one time and walked straight past me into the house!!! wasnt too bothered cos i wasnt up to no good anyway.
