DarrenW - 18/12/08 at 12:12 PM

As title. Im meeting a mate at Blyth services tonight. He works as electrical contractor at either a power station or substation about 15 mins drive from blyth. Just curious whats there. Of course ill ask him later but cant get hold of him while he is working.

I think its a coal fired power station. I'm going past it again tomorrow on my way to Durham to pick my son up from uni.

Big pile of black rocks in the car park, so I think its Coal fired!

Easily visible on the east Side of the A1.

Definitely the most OT heading yet

there used to be a power station - its demolished now (assuming we are talking about teh same one)

They are building a new substation on it site (over the next year or two)
I just finished designing some structures for it last night

stick this into google earth / maps
55° 8'35.99"N
1°31'54.49"W

of course it could be a smaller site near by instead

That stacks up, he did say he was busy stripping old switch gear out earlier in the year and i believe now busy rebuidling.

Isnt it amazing how such an O/T theme can be answered so quickly.

Canny few windmills in the sea off the coast there as well.

There's one near Newark at Cotham with a nice campsite next door and a good few walks by the Trent. It has some fishing pegs and a couple of ponds nearby as well.

I thought it might be a bit early for them to be working on that site

there are jobs everywhere at the moment, most of the country is getting re-wired (they built most of it in the 50's with a give or take 50 year design life)

geoff shep - 18/12/08 at 03:12 PM

There are 3 in quick succession on the Trent, northerly one is abeam Blyth: Top One, Next One at Cottam and Southerly one- one of which is being decomissoned I think.

Are you aware that all the roundabouts are gone now on the A1 in that area (all the way down to Colsterworth) so it's easy to miss the Blythe exit.

Not substation works, but I've worked at Ferrybridge, Eggborough (both the coal and the ARBRE plant, which went into liquidation 8 days after first production) and Drax, Aberthaw, Kings North and Grain power stations.
