Choosing an engine.. a nutty thought on a friday
tegwin - 19/12/08 at 02:28 PM

Ok ok.. so I have this weird idea that I want to get an older style polo... fit an MX5 rear subframe and diff... fit wider wheel arches and stick a more interesting engine in the front....

Here is where I am stuck... I want to be able to use the car to hammer around alpine roads...enjoy all the fun that our country roads can offer at 4 in the morning....

So what engine should I fit? (It HAS to be VAG!)

I could use the popular 4 piston 20V turbo engine... That is good for 350-400hp with out a silly amount of work.

Or there is the V6 engine from the VR6...

Or the V8 from the passat/audi estates...

So which engine would you choose and why? And what gearbox would you use?

(I know some of you might think this chavvy... but its interesting and I like it LOL)

absolutely no idea when it comes to VW engines, but love the car compared to the original. I dont think making something look more aggressive instantly makes it chavvy, although the car in the picture could probably be toned down a little!

dinosaurjuice - 19/12/08 at 02:40 PM

i would go for the turbo engine simply because i think cars with turbos are more fun!

quite a few 1.8t's knocking about aswell..

cant wait to see this if it materialises!

How about using a V6 4motion golf or passat? if your cutting the floor anyway then why not 4WD!

Plus you can use one donnor car for everything keeping it locostbuilders style!

I thought about this for my MK1 golf but its too solid to hack so 20V turbo for me

Miks15 - 19/12/08 at 02:52 PM

Im with Jimbob, 4WD would be great fun in a car like that, I reckon either that or go mid-engined

Oh right.
Well, as you didnt state a budget for the car, my vote goes for Veyron engine

carpmart - 19/12/08 at 03:00 PM

I like the car in the picture!

VW only you say, so it has to be a W12 engine with a couple of turbo's

tegwin - 19/12/08 at 03:14 PM

Haha... mid mounted W12 engine... as per their concept golf...

The heat from that would be painfull..

I fear the w12 engine would be too heavy...

Turbo lump would be nice...

How hard would it be to transfer a 4wd system into a smaller car... it would add a lot of weight and compication... not sure the handling would eb any better than a rear wheel drive car...?

cd.thomson - 19/12/08 at 03:16 PM

you wouldnt see the same handling increases, but it would help get the power down onto the floor enormously. Even considering the extra weight of a 4x4 system you would be seeing improved performance over a rwd car with the same spec.

The only issue I can see is gearbox choice if you're planning front engine/rear drive with a VAG motor. I know there are Ford gearbox adapters available, but if you're going to use an MX5 rear end, why not use the engine and gearbox too with a shortened prop?

martyn_16v - 19/12/08 at 04:55 PM

You could always get the transmission from a 924, it's about the closest thing to a VW RWD. I'm not 100% sure if the bellhousing pattern is the same as the 1.8T though.

I've had similar thoughts for a while now, but a mk2 Golf RWD with an Audi V8

tegwin - 19/12/08 at 06:21 PM

Hmmm...

The porsche uses a transaxle at the back...

hillbillyracer - 19/12/08 at 07:31 PM

How about using the gearbox from a Quattro model of some sort but lock the centre diff & not bother with the front shafts to make a RWD box that will bolt straight onto your engine? Mabye more work than converting the bellhousing from another RWD box but worth a look.
Mabye look at some diesel Volvos? They used the VAG 5 cylinder diesel for a while so mabye there's a box with the right bolt pattern there?
If you were going 4WD it'd have to be the transverse set-up from a Golf etc, the in-line layout from the quattros puts the engine right out ahead of the front axle line. 4WD sounds like a lot of weight & compliction that could spoil a nice idea though.
PPC mag did a featrue a few months back on a mk1 Polo that had a front mounted bike engine & RWD.

Depends whaere u want the power.

YOu could get a v6 syncro passat for not alot of money and use the hole drivetrain with a shortened prop. That would give you low down power. Theres supercharger kits for these for an extra kick up the bum.

Failing that a 1.8t.

Audi quattro 5 pot turbo? I saw a vid of a mk2 golf with this in. 550hp or something just trying to find it,.

repper - 19/12/08 at 08:14 PM

chop shop put a scooby in to a golf why no do it to a polo 4x4 turbo

Danozeman - 19/12/08 at 08:36 PM

Here you go 550hp golf

It was posted on here the other day.

What's wrong with that? Torque tube shouldn't be too hard to shorten if needs be, and it'll put a bit of weight over the back wheels, which'll probably come in handy
