Is anyone on here a banger rally expert?
hillbillyracer - 28/12/08 at 03:48 PM

I think there's a few on here who have done a banger rally, I've fancied doing one for a while. I've been offered a suitable motor & a mate is up for it.
We've looked at a few websites but before we start making enquiries etc what having done one would you now be looking for/asking about? We're not looking for anything too long or wild, just a 3-4 day run over a long weekend in late summer (seems to be a few on then) for a bit of fun.

Mango's done rust to rome and raves about it. I'm sure he'll be along to tellyou about it as well. Strangely enough SWMBO is keen on it as well ???? because I told her 2 xmas ago I'd take her to rome and hav'ent yet. She thinks it's the only way she'll get there.

Well that sounds like an ideal situation for you, SWMBO approves & takes pert in of some car related larking about & you stay on in Rome for a more conventional break when the rally is done!

But I'm tight as a ducks arse mate

Me too, having looked at entry costs it's comparable with an ordinary holiday, not just for pennies but there'll be a lot of work setting it up & a lot goes to charity.
Besides I can see it being something Id always wished I'd done, so I think it has to happen sometime & this year looks as good as any other.

get something that comes from the countrys that you plan to travel through. spares easy to get
get the base model...less to go wrong or have to fix if if it goes wrong.

get a car that still has tax and mot to cover the trip there and back.
If its a one way trip
Dont dump the car in the airport carpark......rather just find a scrapper and get a taxi to the port

make sure it not a boiler...and use things like clios or 106 pugs, a chinky chento is a very cheap car to get off piston heads.

a good place to get is the local auction but do your home work and watch the market for a few weeks to avoid buying the returns from the previous weeks.

cars that are lousy colours sell for no money.

most of all make sure its not a car you love as we bashed them all the way there and all the way back.

see rust2rome 2008 and look for number 8 the pug.

Small car 25 to 30 euros petrol every day
camping 15 euros a nite per car
ferry 150 quid 2ways
food bought from lidols
entry fee

We do the longer rally 10 days worth one way and make it into a two week gig.
The shorter rallys tend to be very rushed and not much time for any sight seeing.

We stay in rome for two days and thats enought to see a lot of it.
we went south to pompie and sorrento + down to mafia central.
Seen the ferrari factory and the museam
nice

Camping in france is ace and the hot water in the camp is free, italy the camp sites are more expensive and they charge for the hot water

change the brake pads in the front......just do it.....fix the radio so it works and make sure you can charge your roaming phone
and camera batts.

A hard shell wooden box is good to lock stuff away that you really need.

Stickered cars draw attention so remember to not leave ipods sat nav passport on cash ect

the charity model we use is we pay for the car and trip. We then use that as a way of collecting for our favorite charitys
such as my local animal rescue service.
thers a website that you set up and people gift through that. That keeps it all above board and honest.

The overall cost is low for the experiance and places you visit.

I would take ten holidays to see what we saw last year.

I have co drivers this year so It will take the strain off me doing the whole 4250miles. The trip in the car is quickly forgotten as you become immersed in the scenery and places.

GREAT FUN and I want to go to VIETNAM........care to come with.

Well you've come up with a few things there for us to consider that I had'nt thought of!
We already have a car offered, not the best for a cheap ferry crossing or good on fuel as it's a Volvo 240! But it's very cheap (about £50 & it has 2 months tax at the mo & £40 of fuel in the tank!), I've known it a couple of years, it's in decent order & being a basic spec & generally bomb-proof should be good for the job. Whatever we use it'll get a though mechanical sort-out, service items are cheap & I'm an agric & motor mechanic.
Cheers for the advice, Kev.

For your ferry the norfolk line dunkirk to dover is 19 quid if you book now

68 in high season.
Forget the rosyth Zee bugger one as it was tooooo expensive, may be cheaper when Norfolk take over in the next few months
