Watch out for this one peeps, seems to be happening quite often.

It does happen more often than you think. My cousin once pulled the tv over. My uncle just caught it in time.

My 32" Sony LCD TV came with a couple of screw-in eyelets so that it could be fastened to the wall behind, plus instructions in the handbook on how to deploy them - not fitted by me, as it wouldn't be practical.

i wondered about this, job for tomorrow, saftey straps incase niece/nephew try anything!

Our son pushed our TV off the wooden cabinet when he'd just learnt to walk - we found that it slid very easily on the wooden top. It now has holes drilled through the cabinet top and screws into the threaded bushes on the bottom of the TV.

Yeah even my heavy old fashioned one that I can hardly carry will easily glide off the stand if bumped, fortunately we only have dogs at the moment but I can see it being a hazard for kids.

Peteff - 29/12/08 at 11:07 AM

Our tv is on a piece of non slip mat like this but I will say now, don't panic till you find out the full details of what happened.

The large LCD ones are a bit easy to pull over - they're quite light and, although the base is quite large and stable, it wouldn't take much effort to pull it forward. A 2 or 3 year-old could easily manage it.

Sony obviously consider that it's a risk, else they wouldn't put so much effort into warning people and providing tethering points!

Mind you, I'm one of those people who consider it more important to educate the kids, rather than wrap them in cotton-wool.

Well it ain't a problem for my 28" CRT TV cos it's blooming heavy and bolted to an even heavier stand. I think all in the thing weighs 60kg... Don't think a kid would be able to pull that over (the huge amount of gubbins hanging over the back of it would counter-balance it)...

but it's a good thing to be aware off!!

Peteff - 29/12/08 at 02:27 PM

Full details are now on the BBC news site. It was a tragic accident which was not the tv being pulled or falling over.

David Jenkins - 29/12/08 at 02:47 PM

Sad - he shouldn't have been carrying it by himself, but a tragedy all the same. A dreadful event for all the family.
