Looking at buying a car which has status 'unlicensed' with the dvla. It's at one of the big car supermarket type places. What are the consequences of this, ie it's got not tax and it hasn't been sorn. Can i pitch up at the post office with insurance new keepers bit of V5 and MOT and get a tax disc or is it going to be a problem?

Tell them to tax it before you collect (at your expense) - they should be able to do it from their office if they've kept up with the times.

You shouldn't have any liability until car comes into your possession.

Big car supermarkets will be desperate for your business and will (should) do anything to get your money. Ask them to tax it at your expense. They need that hassle more than you do.

Yeah I've tried that, and they reckon they can't. It's more of a lease vehicle disposal place than a supermarket. It's unbelievable really, I rang up and said tax it, I will even pay for it and i will collect it saturday. No can do...

I'm ready to walk away but it's a stonking deal....

am i right in thinking, there wouldn't be a v5 (and so no new keeper part) until the car's registered?

They have the V5 and can give me the new keeper supplement. Unlicensed refers to it's tax status.. it has a number plate.

There won't be a problem, just got to the PO and tax it as normal, as said above you are not liable until is's registered to you.

Is it ex disabled? you shouldn't have a problem taxing it if you have the documents.
