im having a 'discussion' with someone who seems to think they are right...but im not so sure.
basically, would a car beat a bike round a given track? for example, lets say an indy against a yamaha r1?
id have thought the car would win cause of the higher cornering speeds...yet the other party says that the acceleration and straight line speed of the
bike would always win...
Depends on lots of factors, the type of car for a start and the length of the circuit and number of bends.
Generally on small circuits a car will have more advantage as it will be on the power out of corners earlier, but on longer circuits the bike would
catch up and overtake if there are longer straights.
Topgear did a bike vs car test a few years ago on a mainstream circuit.
Car won...
But agreed - depends on what bike/car and the layout of the track.

Fifth Gear also did a test, the car won. Bikes have a higher performance on long circuits but cars take corners quicker. Fastest lap speeds at race
cicuits also demonstrate this. Bikes are more fun to watch racing though. Barry

I think the only way to do a fair test would be 2 vehicles with same power to weight ratio, which is possibly why they used the R6??
I remember on one of Jeremy clarksons dvd's, he raced a porsche 911 against an R1 at truxton. The car won.

Yes, different tracks different winners. Car oriented programmes always seem to have car beating bike as the result!
I think the simple answer is there is no clear winner, too many variables - the most significant being the driver & rider.
I would say that it all depends on the driver/rider but with a simliar skilled driver/rider, i would say the car would win. But lots of factors

I've seen it done with a 911 and R1 - 911 was the clear winner due to the cornering speeds.
It'd be worth remembering that the porsche also has a decent top speed for the long straights where an Indy will ru out of beath around 115-120,
so the R1 would probably just blow it way on the first big run.
Car's ALWAYS going to win, because he just has to nudge the bike and it's curtains. 
Its impossible to give a definitive answer to the question as there are too many variables!
