OT...help ! Getting red wine off brown leather
NigeEss - 14/1/09 at 12:41 AM

Preferably before the wife finds out

As the title really.

Just managed to spill a glass full (freshly poured) all over the sofa. Washed it with plenty
cold water but hoping for a miracle product to avoid a big stain and my untimely demise

Wash it with white wine ! Yea really!!

NigeEss - 14/1/09 at 12:59 AM

I'll give it a go.

Bottle of white to save my life = worth it

Split half a bottle of red on a cream carpet. Poured a whole bottle of white onto it and rubbed it. No stain to be seen.

One very very relieved son.

so just how bad did your house smell after one and a half bottles on wine poured on the carpet?

mr_pr - 14/1/09 at 09:15 AM

Haha, once it had dried I followed it up with some carpet cleaner to the smell.

Never been caught, unless my parents decide to become locostbuilders!

Soda water is an old tip for removing red wine stains.

DarrenW - 14/1/09 at 10:38 AM

Sorry cant help on the brown leather bit. However there was a radio article on recently where the interviewer was asking people in the street about popular stain removing tips. One interviewee was sure that if you splilt white wine on a carpet you could remove the stain by pouring a bottle of red wine over it!

Regarding the leather sofa - its worth getting some correct type protector for it. We treat ours regularly and it never stains - although i would say we havent tried pouring wine over it (yet!). Furniture sales place sold us a kit when we got the suite.

WHILST still wet pour table salt on it. Salt attracts the tannin in wine which is what
causes stains. When dry, hoover it up. If there are any remaining stains a carpet cleaner will do the rest.

I dont think salt and leather is a good mix. If it attracts the tanins in the wine id guess it will do the same to the leather.

As with all suggestions, try in an inconspicuous area first.

just thinking the state my leather shoes get in when on the beach with the dogs and they get wet

Wiped over with some of Bargain Boozes finest
Pinot Grigio and it seems fine this morning.
Thinking about it we did go for the treatment option when it was bought.

Got caught out though as I missed some splashes on a cushion cover

Yes your right! The salt is for red wine in carpet! Salt on leather is not a good idea!!!!!
