What's a good car for towing?
aerosam - 25/1/09 at 08:32 PM

I'm thinking of changing my tin top in the near future and i'm thinking of replacing it with something that could tow my locost to trackdays with relative ease.

I'm only looking to spend 1-2 grand at the most, so it's going to be ebay or my local motor auctions.

what would you reccomend?

My ideas so far are:

Vauxhall Omega 2.5 diesel or 3.0 petrol
Subaru Forrester

Rover 220, or 45 with the 2.0 Tdi. Pulls mine with ease and still gives 40mpg.

Just me tho, I LOVE Rovers (cause they're cheap!)

Volvo 960

What are you looking to tow? My dads got a 2.5td Omega and used to tow his old boat (16ft fishing boat) and his caravan with it, and it was disappointing. Mainly cos its quite high geared so pulling off with confidence into busy roundabouts was rare. Although the only thing he could compare it with at the time was his 2.6i Auto Carlton, which even with the boat on was point and squirt. I'd imagine the auto 3.0 Omega would be pretty good, but don't know wether it would need an uprated oil cooler if you were towing something heavy/regularly.

What Mookaloid said ^ SAABs are pretty cheap at the mo. - comfortable, well equipped, quite a few speciaists about, good cheap parts supply from non-franchised outlets and you can even get a 1.9tdi if you look around.
Cheers, pewe

Omega's have a very bad reputation --- mainly for expensive electrical faults. When buy a cheap 2nd hand largish car a good indicator of reliability and running costs is what the minicab trade drive --- you don't see many Omega mini cabs.

Rover 600 is a good bet if you can find a nice ex retired bank manager one. Only real fault on any of the different models is rust round the front of the rear wheel arch.

Rover 800 are even cheaper and nice ones are around to be bought for buttons.hatch back has Boge self leveling dampers ideal for towing, just don't touch the 2.5 (either engine) the other engines are fine ie 2.0, 2.0 turbo , 2.7 and the Diesel.

Most family sized cars really with turbo diesel engines, or a large petrol engine preferably on LPG to recover the economy.

Make the trailer as light as possible, then with the car on it should not exceed 700kg all up so should not be a problem, Speedy's suggestion is a good one but I am biased.

I can recommend one of these. Mine's going like a train at around 150k miles. Sadly he's currently redundant as I take the train to work.

go with a legacy/forester

zetec - 26/1/09 at 07:01 AM

I've towed my MK using a Volvo 940 turbo and Toyota Landcruiser 3.0TD...No guessing which did the best! The 4x4 made very light work of it and still did 30mpg. Seems like weight of tow vehicle and tractor like grunt is the way to go.

Thirsty but a V8 5 series BMW tows with ease...

Fair few of them round here.

If you're careful about which one you choose, there's nothing wrong with Omegas...I've run one for nearly 6 years and it's been pretty reliable....just retired it (but not disposing of) due to company car...

Ive got a Forester as a cheap commuter car already, so im going to be using that.

177bhp and Bags of torque low down, due to relatively small turbo. Also a huge rear load capacity.

I cannot think of anything better, but I dont have a trailer yet.
