Plan was to get up early and go swimming (on my own, part of my get fit kind of thing).

Wife wakes me up and asks if I want tea - like come on!!!

Five mins later she asks me to go and look at one of our cats - lying a bit strangely (for her) and face looks a bit odd.

Now, she's (the cat!) had a very rapidly growing tumor on her neck - vet said back in Nov/Dec it would need removing almost immediately (at cost of £3 - 6000!!) but research on web made us decide against massively invasive surgery which would give her another year at most with the tumor 80% likely to return withing three - six months.

Needless to say, she'd unfortunately succumbed - it was only last night we were thinking of taking her back to the vet at the end of the week for her final, be all and end all jab.

So, first thing I did this morning was bury the cat.

Worst bit was telling our (6 and 8 year old boys).

The tumor grew between her shoulder blades and is quite common apprarently - usually appears at vaccination sites.

lost two dogs,one to a tumor and the other to old age.

... but betwee that way than taking cat to vet to be put down.

My previous cat had a tumour appear on it's neck which we didn't find until it had already grown a bit. Our vet removed it (at a rather large cost) and said it was a very difficult operation, as it had spread around her neck. The cat was back to her old self for a few months before it re-appeared, and we took the difficult decision to forgo any further surgery as it was so unlikely to be successful in the long term.

Sadly our old dog who had been suffering from arthritic hips and increasing incontinence was also going downhill rapidly, and we ended up having both of them put down on the same day. Not too proud to say a few tears flowed that day.

BTW, if you are thinking of getting another cat, I can thoroughly recommend a Main Coon, it's almost a cross between a dog and cat in behaviour and a lot of fun.

i had the same with 2 of my rats, which might not sound much, but if you've had a pet rat you will know what i mean.

While it's a bit strange not having her lie on my comfy belly (and trying to put holes in it), I don't find myself too upset - maybe because we've known for about three months that this was coming and it would be quick. Eldest boy ok, but his kid bro was quite distressed when we told him yesterday, and we had trouble getting him to settle last night. Hey ho.

Went cycling two weeks ago (6 miles, not far I know, but I kept a constant pace for the half hour it took), then last Sunday did about 35 lengths in the pool, then yesterday did 40 - 50 lengths followed by a 6.5 mile ride (in half hour!!)

Want to go swimming tonight - 9 till 10 pm. We'll see (if I'm allowed out)

If you decide to get another cat go to your local branch of Cats Protection http://www.cats.org.uk/ as there are loads that have been left homeless
