Just agreed the purchase of a mitsubishi warrior, and I'm planning to fit a sport back to it, which renders the rear view mirror all but useless.

I'm thinking the answer is a reversing camera, which raises a couple of questions:

Are they legal?

Should they only come on when reverse is selected?

Cant really see they are any different to a satnav but with our crazy legalk system.....

I've only ever had reverse-cameras when they've been fitted as original equipment. These only came on when reverse was selected.

Tell you what though - once you've used them, you'll never look back (see what I did there!?).

They make a satnav with a reversing camera on it.

You are required to have two usable mirrors. ---

Bigest problem with reversing cameras is water ingress to the camera after pressure washing

The other problem is sunlight on the screen making the image invisible.

If you go for one
(1) At least 3.5" screen --- 2.5" is useless.
(2) Should have night vision
(3) Wireless is much easier to fit.

Maplin do a couple but perhaps not the cheapest place to buy.

You can actually get combined camera & sensor system --- But I don't know a UK supplier

With reversing sensors check carefully the minimum range ---- mine goes down to 0.6m but some will give the continous beep at 1.2 meteres which is pretty useless.

With ultra sonic parking sensors beware low bollards & poles as they don't pick up round objects well. With your vehicle because you should be able to see the rear corners in the door mirrors a 4 sensor system should be fine --- a lot of cars that have a tapered rear end really need 6 sensors because you can see anything after the rear door handles.

Thanks for the advice folks, I'll take a look round whats available and where I can mount the screen in the truck when I get it (thursday).

Take a look at Costco too. Haven't been there for a bit, but I'm sure they were advertising one at around £40 IIRC, last time I was there.

I considered getting one to avoid reversing unsuccessfully and repeatedly with a trailer on...
