I need a new corded drill for use when fitting shield anchors into concrete but can't afford the likes of DeWalt.

I was tempted to buy one of the low cost SDS Plus machines sold through DIY chains or Screwfix for £50 - £60 but are these any good?

On e-bay there is a Ryobi ERH-750V 710W SDS+ drill which is lower powered than the "Titan" or "Erbauer" brands at Screwfix and looks more like a conventional drll (the Screwfix items having the motor at right angles to the output).

I'm told that Ryobi is a good brand so would I be better to go with this or the Titan / Erbauer option.

Alternatively what else could I consider and where's the best place to buy?

I bought a cheap as chips "challenger" type ones from Ebay (via argos clearance sale). Did the job for me chomping through a brick wall with a 100mm TCT bit.... Some of the cheaper drills are heavy without being very powerful apparantly...

I have had a £40 special from Aldi for the last 5 years at home. So far I've refurbished the ground floor, built an extension on the back of the house, and converted the attic with it.

If / when it breaks I'll just replace it with another cheapy.

That sounds like my Ryobi one which has handled pretty much everything I've asked it too.

Make sure you get SDS 'stop' feature as that's great for taking off tiles or channeling etc etc. (with the appropriate tool fitted).

Just don't expect it to be able to break up concrete!!!

We bought a JCB from Makro for £32.00 + vat. It paid for itself on the first job, we went on to abuse it for a further 3 years. Using to roto stop too much knackered the gear box. The drill are as good as new.

Have since bought a corded Makita for £85 + vat very nice and light unit. Have also used the cheap Screwfix ones and cant fault those either.

This over supply of cheap goods is one of the reasons this country is in such a mess. Every person who has touched one of these has made money on it and it then sells for £40!!

A lad in work bought two 'Aldi' type drills. We all took the p*ss.

He still has them, two years later, still going strong and being used most weeks on site (although 240v he shouldn't but still does). He even core cuts with a diamond bit even though it doesn't have a clutch.

In that tie, I've sent back numerous DeWalt, Atlas Copco, Milwaukee and Bosch drills for repair.

I won't be taking the p*ss out of Aldi / Makro type stuff again
