OT - Locost MP3 hi-fi ?

I’m thinking about building some kind of MP3 hi-fi, but I’ve got a budget of £0 and a pile of old PC’s and bits
I want to make something as simple as possible, without a screen (or a very small one if I can find one for next to nowt) with just the minimum number of controls (play, stop, pause, next track, shuffle……) and maybe some kind of remote

Any suggestions?

I've got a pentium 233 on an AT MB and some PII / PIII's on 'slot A' ATX MB's

and I've got Unix/ DOS 6.2/ win95/ win98se/ win2k (all redundant real ones)
I know that you can setup dos/old windows to automaticaly run a program at startup

the problem is how to make it as neat possible........


.....but I just had a thought - what if I started with something like an old ipod / MP3 player - then all I'd need is a PSU, amp and maybe a removable disk of some kind - I think?

Have a look at Linux. There are a variety of distros and a variety of Audio options that will run on pretty ancient and slow hardware. There is even a distro specifically for multi media. Important issue is a good sound card for output if you want anything remotely like decent sound quality. It is a lot of fun working with Linux you can really get it to do anything you want with a bit of work!

My mums ipod classic didn't last long and they wouldn't sort it under warrnty - but its dead, according to my brother the screen might work but thats about it

I recon I'd only need a 32Gb disk / CF card at most, even a 16Gb would do and they are quite cheap
(I've got a 16Gb microSD in my phone and its almost enough)

having to sync it with the PC would't be a big issue - I wouldn't need to change it that much


so say I did get a dead ipod (I've got some small CF cards for the camera for now) would I need a dock to connect it up to the amp ?
also I guess I'd need a PSU that could run the amp and ipod (usb?)

I've got an old set of creative 6.1 speakers (2 channels don't seem to work) do you think I could use that ?

Could get a iRiver hp140.
- Theres a lot of people hacked them with 80/120gb harddisks. Cant be more than a few quid on ebay. Although i'll never sell my old girl.
